Job description
Work involves limited, but skilled sub-professional engineering and land surveying work in the office or field. The employee must be familiar with office records, field locations and drafting techniques. Duties must be performed with skill and accuracy, for data collected are used by professional engineers and surveyors as a basis for the development of plans and specifications. Positions in this class include instrument operators on survey parties, journeymen draftsmen or inspection of right-of-way areas. Supervision is received from a higher level Engineering Technician, Surveyor or Civil Engineer.
Prepares survey field notes for design purposes and location determination.
Processes and prepares right-of-way deeds of dedication.
Prepares notice of violation letters and sends them via pdf to violator in a professional e-mail and assists with other central office duties.
Responds to complaints and follows departmental procedures for notification, re-inspections and other actions required to ensure compliance.
Reviews maintenance of traffic and lane closure plans.
Handles duties of central files, including filing, indexing, checking, and updating Municipal Atlas Sheets (MAS) sheets.
Operates total station to establish lines for surveys. Makes minor adjustments to total station. Traverses drainage areas with total station determines size and area and may recommend or assist in recommending size and type of drainage structures needed. Crosschecks curve data and other computations made by total station operator.
Operates digital level to establish elevation along centerline of survey to get grade stakes, benchmarks and other points of elevation for surveys. Reads hand level. Records level, cross section and other notes in field book, and makes simple computations for standard level notes.
Provides guidance to contractors for right-of-way improvements according to approved plans.
Locates reference points and establishes new ones; establish and set points in staking out roadways, bridges and culverts.
Plots survey notes to scale showing alignment, topography and profile. Prepares drawings for records after construction from “as built” field notes.
Researches files and court records for information relating to deeds, property owners, existing water and sewer mains and other facilities.
Supervises the activities of the survey party in absence of party chief.
Performs field inspections of the permit location before and after the permit is issued.
Performs other related work as required.

Equivalent combination of education and experience beyond a high school diploma or its equivalent and some 6 months of the required experience.
WRITTEN EXAMINATION: In addition to the above stated minimum requirements, eligibility for this position will be established based on the results of a written examination. The examination is designed to measure job-related knowledge involving assignments in Public Works projects. The subject matter includes problems covering surveying and general engineering. Applicants may bring and use a calculator during the examination; however, no electrical outlets are provided for this purpose and all calculations must be shown on the answer sheet. Please Note: Cellular phones are not permitted to be used during the written exam.
