Job description
This position is located in the Operations Administration, Streetlight Division of the District Department of Transportation (DDOT). The purpose of the position is to provide electrical engineering techniques and skills for the implementation of transportation services including but not limited to the inspection of streetlights and traffic signals.
The incumbent serves as an advanced technical team member, responsible for the scoping of streetlight projects, conduct plan review and conduct daily inspections of streetlight and traffic signal construction and maintenance projects. In addition, this position provides support of division projects and services that requires experience in written and oral communications, customer service, and expert problem solving.
Duties and Responsibilities
The incumbent of this position plans, conducts, and inspects various types of highly complex, new, or state-of the art projects to develop streetlight and traffic signals, electrical circuits and equipment, and breadboards for systems. This position also involves the preparation and review of complex plans, specifications and cost estimates in conformance with established procedures for new electrical component construction or major modification of existing electrical exterior distribution systems. Incumbent will review grounding of streetlight equipment and outdoor electrical systems.
The incumbent will also be responsible for conducting day and/or night inspections to assess the condition of streetlight and traffic signal assets and construction sites. The incumbent will conduct independent oversight of streetlight construction projects to ensure that contractors are in compliance with the approved contract documents, District rules and regulations and the National Electrical code (NEC), enforce MOT and safety requirements. The incumbent shall have broad knowledge of construction projects and be able to inspect including civil and electrical work. The incumbent will prepare daily construction reports, verify quantities of material used, review submittals, RFI’s and contractor’s monthly invoices. The incumbent will attend preconstruction and progress meetings.
Qualifications and Education
The incumbent must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lowest grade level in the normal line of progression. Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the line of work of the position and has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.
Specialized experience to include but not limited to electrical construction expertise with reviewing, preparing and modifying plans of new or existing electrical component construction. Strong expertise in inspection of civil and electrical work. 10 years’ experience in electrical construction or certified journeyman electrician is preferred.
Working Conditions/Environment
The work involves regular and recurring exposure to moderate risks and discomforts and requires that the incumbent stay continually alert and take special safety precautions.
Licenses and Certifications
The incumbent must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
Electrician license preferred.

Emergency Designation: This position has been designated as an essential employee position under the provisions of District Personnel Manual, Chapter 12. As such, your services may be required in emergency situations to perform crucial duties, i.e., snow removal, debris removal, transportation, shelter operation, food distribution, and communications. These duties may be performed when the government is closed or when most employees are dismissed early. Employees are required to work rotating shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Employees are considered emergency personnel and are subject to call-in 24 hours a day and will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.
