Purpose: Supporting the Engineering Supervisor, the Engineering Technician will ensure that the Port facilities and equipment meet all current legislation and the operational needs of the business are met, making sure costs are adhered to as well as achieving high levels of customer service.
About You:
We’re looking to recruit an Engineering Technician to work in a primarily office based role within our Lowestoft port. This is a highly varied operation incorporating an award winning marina, major cargo operations, and a growing emphasis on offshore wind including the LEEF project which is set to provide additional berthing and warehousing space in addition to further enhancing ABP’s commitment to sustainability.
You’ll be someone with an engineering background looking to focus on the organisational and coordinating side of that role. Whilst there will be some hands on elements your day to day will be focusing on control of contractors, organising works, permits & permissions and liaising with outside bodies such as Highways England. Some experience of using a CMMS is required, ideally Mainsaver but full training will be provided on our systems. You’ll need to be good with people and able to influence behaviours and communicate information verbally and written both internally and externally.

Accountabilities:
- Carryout maintenance works in a diligent and timely manner in order to meet the requirements of port operations both individually and as part of a larger team. All in accordance with ABP’s risk assessments and Safe Systems of Work.
- Developing a culture of continuous improvement by:
o Supporting and enhancing the Control of Contractor’s functions and compliance with ABP requirements, ensuring appropriate pre-task review, in task monitoring and post-task job reviews are completed
o Ensuring applicable risk assessments and Safe Systems of Work are kept up to date and improved upon as new information or ways of working are made available.
o Ensuring that all relevant information is recorded and analysed following completion of work orders and purchase orders for entry using a CMS system.
- Ensuring efficient utilisation of contractors by communicating work allocation through daily & weekly scheduling.
- Carryout maintenance works in conjunction with third party contractors as required.
- Assisting overseeing the maintenance and repair of the Bascule Bridge under the terms of ABP’s agreements with National Highways.
- Undertake any daily pre-user, weekly, monthly etc., plant inspections as instructed by the Engineering Supervisor.
- Assist the Engineering Supervisor to identify future maintenance requirements / repairs required.
- To promote and work to the company core values, ensuring standards are consistently applied amongst the team.
- Communicate with other departments during servicing operations and the repair of equipment & infrastructure.
- To work on own initiative and as well as directed by the Engineering Supervisor and by the operations management team
- Assist the Engineering Supervisor in planning daily tasks
Essential Criteria:
- GCSE or equivalent Maths/ English or relevant experience.
- Engineering knowledge with a desire to develop this further
- Ability to demonstrate a fundamental understanding of Health and Safety principles including developing Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
- Experience with a CMS type system, creating work orders for preventative or reactive maintenance tasks, recording relevant information and closing jobs off.
- Sound IT skills demonstrating an understanding and use of a range of Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Excellent communication / interpersonal skills demonstrating the ability to communicate to both internal and external customers and the ability to work as part of a team.
- A flexible and committed approach to working within a small team.
- Ability to deliver the ethos of exceptional customer service and always seeking to improve quality and service for both internal / external stakeholders
Desired Criteria:
- NVQ Level 3 (Engineering discipline).
- Ability to follow work instructions, but also react positively to 'off- plan' situations.
- Ability to approach 'Fault Finding' in a methodical manner with a view to safely re-instating facilities in a timely manner.
- Experience of working in a pressured environment with a track record of meeting targets in a timely manner.
- Willing to undertake relevant training as and when required.
- Ability to set priorities and co-ordinate a range of activities plus a committed pro-active approach.
- Familiarity with the operations and equipment on the Port Estate would be a distinct advantage.
- Knowledge of Port Operations.
- Facility maintenance experience
