Job description
We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and proactive individual to join our engineering team, for a period of 12 months. This placement will see you contribute to our performance and provide a unique opportunity to see how a Formula 1 team works.
You need to be able to use your own initiative, work proactively and, often, to strict deadlines in a high-pressure environment – in what is a demanding but extremely rewarding role.
Your placement will take place across various areas of the Engineering department:
- Aerodynamics (including CFD).
- Design (including Mechanical, Composite, Structural Design).
- Vehicle Performance (including Vehicle Dynamics and Simulation).
- Control Systems.

Role Description & Responsibilities
We would expect the following from successful candidates:
- The ability to quickly integrate within teams to maximise effectivity.
- Delivering projects in your chosen project area that will directly impact on-track performance.
- Responsibility for specific projects, with guidance and support from experienced team members.
Personal Attributes
The following attributes are required for this role:
- Proactivity and an aptitude for picking up skills and methods quickly.
- The ability to work well under pressure and with time constraints (with support provided to develop towards this point).
- Good engineering fundamentals (such as the ability to visualise concepts) as well as specific technical skills such as CAD, MATLAB or CFD.
- The ability to learn and develop skills on the job, as well as to apply existing skills to new types of problems.
- Good communication and organisational skills to work effectively as part of a close-knit team, with shared responsibilities, working under challenging conditions.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience
The following attributes are required for this role:
- Studying towards a degree in Engineering – in any subdiscipline (e.g. Aerospace, Automotive, Mechanical etc.) with a predicted grade of a 2:1 (or equivalent).
- General computing skills and software knowledge appropriate to placement area. e.g. a prior knowledge of CAD packages is useful for a design placement.
- A practical mindedness and a passion for motorsport.
- Previous experience in motorsport is desirable, but not required.
If you were to be successful during the application process, the final stage of the process will be an assessment centre which will take place on Thursday 9th March 2023 at the McLaren Technology Centre.
