Are you looking to start a career in the rail industry? We have an exciting opportunity to join the locomotive maintenance team at Toton as an Engineering Apprentice.
DB Cargo UK is on an ambitious journey to become Europe’s leading rail logistics provider with a long-term plan to shift traffic from roads, protect our climate and grow the economy. To achieve this, we are looking for Engineering Apprentices to join us as part of our Engineering Team.
Rail is one of the safest and most eco-friendly means of transport with one single freight train able to carry enough materials to build 30 houses. Our services replace the equivalent of over 22 million truck movements every year, saving 7 million tonnes of carbon emissions! As an Engineering Apprentice you’ll be directly contributing to reducing carbon emissions and shifting traffic from roads to the rail.
This is a three year apprenticeship which begins as classroom based in year one but then progresses on to Depot based hands on experience where you will gain an advanced understanding of electro-diesel locomotives, to ensure that all work associated with the maintenance, repair and overhaul of Traction & Rolling stock (T&RS) and components, is completed in a safe, thorough, professional and timely manner.
You will also be able to;
Read and work from engineering drawings
Read and understand electrical schematics
Safely and correctly handle items by hand and mechanical handling equipment
Use systematic faults diagnosis techniques to assist in the rectification of electrical, mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems
Use test and measuring instruments in both metric and imperial units
Select and use correct lubricants and solvents
Dismantle and assemble equipment
Gain an understanding of the application of the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and other regulations, I.E. Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 & Manual Handling & Operation Regulations 1992
Contributing to continuous improvement initiatives
Potential for further education opportunities I.E. HND
To be considered for entry to the Apprenticeship programme you must hold a minimum of two of the following qualifications:
A Level at Grade A - E
AS Level at Grade A - E
O Level at Grade A - E
NVQ or BTEC Level 2 or above in an Engineering subject
This role is 37 hours per week, initial hours will be 8-4 but as the programme progresses you may be required to work at weekends. On completion of the programme you will be expected to work shifts.
You must be aged 18 or over; this is to ensure we are compliant with Health & Safety requirements and regulations around shift patterns and working at night for under 18’s. There is no upper age limit.
In return, we offer a staged salary starting at £15,234 in the first year. This will then increase to £16,135 in the second year, £18,023 in the third year and £24,293 in the forth year.
