Work for the world you want to live in.

Wouldn’t you want to live in a world where people, populations and the planet thrive? Where technology protects rather than threatens. Where societies feel safe and secure. Where cities and continents feel part of one global community.

We’re an international aerospace, defence and security company, with sites all-round the UK, that do loads of exciting and important things to make the world safer and more secure. We defend nations, save lives and protect communities around the globe.

Devonport:

The Engineering Apprenticeship is based at Devonport Royal Dockyard in Plymouth.

Working at Devonport puts the best of the South West at your fingertips. Amazing scenery, vibrant towns and numerous leisure opportunities - It’s why Devon and Cornwall are such desirable places to live and work.

Comprising of 14 dry docks, four miles of waterfront and 25 tidal berths, Devonport is the base for numerous surface vessels as well as the base and refit centre for the Trafalgar-class nuclear-powered submarines. Devonport has also recently been selected as the base port for the Navy’s new Type 26 frigates and will become the maintenance centre for the future submarine programme.

For more than a century, Babcock, the Aerospace and Defence Company, has been trusted to deliver bespoke, highly-skilled engineering services. We help customers in the UK and around the world to improve the capability, reliability and availability of their most critical assets within the four market sectors of Marine, Land, Aviation, and Nuclear, underpinned by a deep understanding of technology integration, unique infrastructure and specialist training.

Engineering Apprenticeship:
Our engineering apprenticeships cover various trade occupations, one of which you will follow, the options include: Mechanical, Electrical, Fabrication, Welding, CNC machining, Pipefitting and Support Engineer.

If you have a preference on a particular trade route, that will be taken in to account at interview stage, however, irrespective of the trade route you are eventually assigned to, you will gain the knowledge and skills to understand the importance of health and safety, planning, documentation, general engineering mathematical and scientific principles, methods and techniques. You will understand the structure, properties and characteristics of commonly used materials, approved diagnostic methods and techniques to overcome problems, the ability to interpret engineering drawings and data and the need to adhere to and continually refine processes and procedures.

Possible placements:

Apprentices will spend their full first year at College, followed by 1 day per week in years 2 and 3 with the other 4 days per week onsite. The 4th year will be spent exclusively onsite.

All apprentices will work at a variety of locations across the site and will move around to gain an insight into all of the operations we undertake.

Qualifications you’ll gain:

You may gain a variety of qualifications throughout your apprenticeship, however the culmination of the apprenticeship is passing the required End Point Assessment, which gains you your nationally recognised apprenticeship certificate as a Level 3 Engineering Technician.

What you’ll need:
A minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade C/4 or above, including English, Maths and a Science or Technology based subject.

What you’ll get:

  • Generous benefits including:
  • Very competitive starting salary
  • Fully funded qualification
  • Personal development training and opportunities
  • Pension scheme with employee contributions matched up to 8% of salary
  • 25 days holidays plus bank holidays
  • Discounted shopping and half-price cinema tickets
  • Cycle to work scheme
