Job description

Who are we?

GWR is the proud custodian of Brunel's railway - one of the most prestigious networks in the world. We have some of the newest trains in the country and exciting plans to extend our services. With more than one hundred million passenger journeys each year, we carry people to over 275 stations in the South West, from Cornwall and South Wales to London, passing through beautiful country and some of the UK's top tourist destinations.

We are transforming the way people think about train travel, empowering our team of over 6,000 people from all different backgrounds to make it a great experience for our customers. Together, we will revalue rail as a very special way to travel – relaxing, fast, efficient, friendly and fun.

As an Engineering Apprentice at GWR, you'll train and earn while you learn how to service, repair and react to faults reported during the operation of the GWR fleet, with the aim of becoming our Engineers of the future.

The apprenticeship is designed to maximise your full potential and provide you with the competencies and qualifications needed to work as a skilled Engineer.

What will I be doing?

During the Apprenticeship, you will study a level 3 qualification in Electrical & Mechanical Engineering, with an opportunity to advance to an HNC based on progression through the apprenticeship. You'll also have your very own mentor to guide you through your journey. You won't be on your own - we'll support you every step of the way.

For the first two years of the apprenticeship, you will work day shifts between 07:00 and 20:00, Monday to Saturday, with a rest day and study time during this period.

For years 3 & 4 you will follow a 24/7 shift pattern. During periods of training, overnight stays may be required.

Alongside the training at the depot, you'll attend college to work towards the required engineering qualification. You'll also be given the opportunity to enrol onto the Duke of Edinburgh Business Gold scheme in Year 2 of your apprenticeship.

Who are you?

You'll enjoy working with people, and have great communication, numerical and team working skills. You'll bring your enthusiasm to learn and a commitment to broadening your knowledge and developing a career in Engineering.

Essentially, you must be over 16 years of age, live within one hour of the locations listed and have achieved or be predicted five GCSEs (or equivalent) Grade 4 or above including Maths, English and Science. ICT would be desirable. You'll have good verbal, and written communication skills. GWR is place where you can truly be your unique self, thrive, and be part of an awesome family.

Additional Information:

You must live within a maximum of 60 minutes travelling time to the depot you apply for. (This means able to travel to work within 60 minutes including both your own travel and using public transport. This is not negotiable).

The apprenticeship scheme starts on 29th August 2023 and is for 4 years.

Recruitment process will involve:

  • Completion of your application
  • If you are short-listed, you will be invited to attend an assessment centre scheduled for week commencing 3rd July.

The Reward:

As well as a great team environment and comprehensive training, all GWR colleagues enjoy a range of benefits including on-going development, defined benefit pension scheme, free rail travel across the GWR network for you and your family, company-sponsored health care plan, discounted shopping and gym membership and an employee assistance programme.
