Why does the job exist?
This position assists the Project Development Engineer (PDE) with better performance-based results, as defined in the current New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT)/Federal Highway Administration Stewardship and Oversight Agreement.
How does it get done?
The position assists in production of quality plans, on schedule, within budget, and per design criteria established by state and federal guidelines. Other duties include contract administration, as directed by the Project Development Engineer (PDE), pertaining to negotiated engineering contracts, as well as maintaining contact with NMDOT support personnel during construction of assigned projects.
Assisting in the development of constructible designs to ensure compliance with standards and specifications for various stages of project reviews up to bidding. Assisting in project scope in coordination with technical staff. Conduct field visits to project locations during design and construction and communicate with other engineers, agencies, communities and consultants as required.
Additionally, assisting in reviewing proposals, initiate consulting service requests with on-call contracts, track consultant progress to meet propose for the design as well as verify the engineers estimate of construction. This position will also need to review plans, design contracts, construction contracts, Requests for Information and construction submittals.
Some travel and extended overnight stays as applicable are required.
Who are the customers?
NMDOT North Region Design, District 4 (Las Vegas), and District 5 (Santa Fe).
Ideal Candidate
- Providing project designs that meet current highway and bridge design standards.
- Preparation of P6 project schedules for all assigned projects.
- Management of consultant tasks to ensure projects are completed on-time and on-budget.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant engineering discipline with licensure and four (4) years of engineering experience. Must be licensed by the NMBLPEPS as a Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing within six (6) months of hire.

Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Business reference check and Driver's License verification are required, and employment is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Employment requires successful completion of post offer pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Field work is also required in varying weather conditions-hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain, and snow; exposure to sunlight, dust, concrete powder, and environmental allergens; exposure to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles; high volume traffic; insects and reptiles, loud noises, confined spaces, and stressful situations; interaction with public, local, county, school, and city officials by phone and in person; work is performed in the field, monthly assignments that require travel and extended overnight stays away from post of duty along with extended hours and occasional travel. Sitting/Standing, bending, squatting, climbing, reaching, kneeling, and crawling for extended periods of time may be required. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
