Atkins are seeking a Senior Well Engineer who will play a pivotal role in technical delivery of our growing Energy Storage business, within the Net Zero group. As a client facing role, you will be developing strong and trusted relationships with our clients.

About the Team:
The subsurface team within the Atkins Energy Storage group consists of a multi-disciplinary team who provide engineering solutions to a number of Energy Storage sites in the UK and Europe.
As well as operational support to our energy storage clients, the subsurface team also provide input into a range of unique engineering projects for Atkins, generally working within a multi-disciplinary team of engineering experts from Atkins and our clients.
In the UK, the team is primarily based in the central belt of Scotland, but staff are also located in other Atkins offices around the UK. Our European base is located in Hamburg Germany, providing support to a number of clients based in the EU and UK. The working location for this role is flexible with options to work from other Atkins offices, remotely from home or at client sites.
What you’ll be doing?
You will be part of our expanding Net Zero business, working in our Energy Storage group within our international multi-disciplinary surface and subsurface engineering team.
This role is for a Senior Well Engineer to lead technical delivery of wells projects for our energy storage clients. The working location of the role is flexible but there will be a requirement undertake site work at our client locations.
As a Senior Well Engineer, you will have the following responsibilities:
- Work closely with clients to develop a deep understanding of project requirements.
- Lead the technical delivery of wells projects. This will include producing feasibility studies and comprehensive design works, planning and operational support for well maintenance, interventions, workover operations, providing engineering input to any investigations or studies that are required by the clients. You will be a key member of our client’s team and will be a focal point for their projects that are being delivered by Atkins.
- Use your knowledge and experience of wells to develop solutions to complex technical issues, communicating these solutions to the client and engineering them through to implementation.
- You’ll provide technical direction and leadership to ensure that we deliver cost effective and innovative solutions to the client. You will be on hand to provide advice, guidance and mentoring for all our team. You will work closely with all disciplines including mechanical engineering, QSSE, procurement and project management.
- You will be a self-motivated person who takes pride in the quality of your work and the success of your projects.
- You will actively engage in the development of the Wells team, sharing and collaborating both technical and safety knowledge and practices.
- Building strong and trusted relationships is an important aspect of this role, so flexibility for travel to the main client site in the North of England and as needed to other sites in the UK and Europe (Atkins offices, vendor’s offices and other client locations) is essential for this role. You will be required to support our growth in the UK and European energy storage market via the technical delivery of wells projects.
What we are looking for?
- Degree qualified in an engineering discipline and/or have equivalent industry experience.
- Technical and demonstratable experience of wells engineering.
- Expertise in a wells related discipline (drilling, services, interventions, production etc).
- Demonstratable knowledge of industry standards, guidelines and requirements.
- Demonstratable knowledge of engineering approval practices.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and experienced in creating and presenting technical reports.
- Experience in leading meetings/workshops/presentations.
- Capable and confident in building and maintaining strong business relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ambition to help us develop a market leading business.
- Flexibility to travel and work from client sites.
- An interest in UK energy development and government Net Zero targets.

Desirable Criteria:
- A background in hydrocarbon storage or the conventional Oil & Gas industry.
- Knowledge of CCS or Hydrogen storage.
- IWCF Level 4 Interventions and / or Drilling Well Control.
- Chartered Engineer.
