What does an Engage Outreach Worker do at Hillingdon?
An innovative and unique opportunity to join an experienced, creative, and high performing team in a culturally diverse area with great opportunities for training and development.
We are looking for practitioners who:
- are enthusiastic about building effective and engaging relationships with children involved, or at risk of being involved, in the Criminal Justice System and improving their life chances
- are able to effectively engage with children while they are in Police Detention and subsequently, to assess their needs and vulnerabilities.
- Are able to directly deliver short diversionary interventions and ascertain and motivate children and their parents into ongoing support services.
- can work in partnership and forge positive relationships with key agencies, e.g. education, social care and health
- can represent the Youth Justice Service competently and confidently in Police Stations and elsewhere
Project Engage
Project Engage is funded by the Mayors Office for Policing (MOPAC) Violence Reduction Unit, for the two-year period from 01 April 2023 to 31 March 2025. Project practical commencement is 01/08/2023.The Project is intended to contribute to the Home Office’s aim of supporting communities to tackle serious violence.
The Project is to provide direct early intervention and prevention activities to children who have been arrested and are in police detention in the Metropolitan Police District. This is considered a ‘teachable moment’ and consequently an effective time to engage with the child, undertake an assessment of serious youth violence risk factors and provide advice, support and signposting to a positive path. Engagement continues outside of the custody area using relational and evidence-based approaches such as restorative practices and brief solution-focused therapies.
The Project also aspires to engage children who have been detained outside of the operating hours and those who have otherwise been investigated by Police. Where capacity permits the Project may be able to support children who have been identified as being at risk of violent offending by other police departments or professionals. The aim of the Project is to provide timely support to children (and engaging with parents/guardians), if necessary, in conjunction with other stakeholders and thereby promote safeguarding of the child and instigate diversionary interventions, thereby securing a reduction in future violent incidents
