The University of Leeds is one of the top 135 universities in the world. We have a truly global community, with more than 39,000 students from 170 different countries and over 9,000 staff of 100 different nationalities. Established in 1904, we have a strong tradition of academic excellence, reflected in first-class student education, along with world-leading research that has a real impact around the globe.
Estate Services, which is part of the University’s Facilities Directorate, supports the University by providing and managing the physical environment in which staff and students work, live and learn. It is committed to providing first class facilities and fit-for-purpose high quality buildings.
The University currently has an annual utilities bill in excess of £30m and has committed to becoming a Net Zero carbon institution by 2030. Our on-site utilities consumption is at the centre of this commitment. The Energy Team monitor and manage the consumption of utilities across the University portfolio, taking positive action to reduce usage through analysis of our consumption and delivery of energy efficiency initiatives within existing buildings across our estate.
As an Energy Officer you will play a key role within this team, supporting the Technical Officer and Energy Manager in identifying, delivering and reporting on energy efficiency initiatives, in support of Net Zero Carbon. You will work closely with Faculty representatives, Maintenance colleagues, the Engineering Team and the Sustainability Team to understand our energy consumption and identify potential solutions, and on a day to day basis work with Project Management colleagues to ensure projects are delivered.
You will undertake building energy audits / inspections and, using your expertise, create feasible project proposals. You will assist in the development of these proposals through feasibility and project brief with the Technical Officer, and ensure delivery remains on track.
You will have a sound understanding of opportunities to improve building energy efficiency including (but not limited to) building fabric, heating, cooling and ventilation systems, lighting and controls. You may also have some experience of building level renewables. You will be able to understand data provided to you and competently appraise options for interventions / suitable replacement technologies, working closely with colleagues in the Estates Engineering team. You will be confident in liaising with consultants and contractors and able to support the Technical Officer in project delivery.
Please note – this role entails physical inspections of buildings including plant and equipment across a large estate. These may be in difficult to access areas and confined spaces.
