Job description

Duties

  • Install, modify, and replace generation and distribution equipment in substations, power generating facilities, transformer vaults, of distribution centers; assures work meets code.
  • Pull in conductors, assemble bus bars, and phase out and connects conductors. Pump out water from manholes, remove debris, and repair ground bonds. Check ground wire connections and cables for cracks, breaks, corrosion, and punctures.
  • Test insulating oil from transformers and oil switches for breakdown and contamination. Check transformer operating temperatures and voltage at secondary terminals and make repairs to defective, loose, or corroded connections.
  • Assure work performed meets required codes and applicable laws and regulations. Read commonly used drawings and diagrams of distribution network and equipment interconnections.
  • Use and maintain various hand and power tools of the trade. Use common high voltage electric power generators, transformers, switches, and circuit breakers.
  • Operate trucks equipped with winch and power takeoff, post hole digger, ladder insulated basket and related equipment.

  • Subject to a one-year probationary period.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license and any installation and/or DOD requirement for the type vehicle being operated.
  • This position is approved for Hazardous Duty Pay and the incumbent is eligible for hazard duty pay differential pay.
  • This position requires employee to obtain and maintain a valid Class B Commercial Driver's license (CDL) within 12 months of the initial start date. Once certification is achieved, there is a requirement for continuous training.
  • The employee is subject to the provisions of the federal Workplace Drug Testing Program (s).
  • This position is designated as essential during inclement weather.
  • The employee will be required to successfully pass physical examinations as required by Federal and Office of Safety and Occupational Health Administration guides with moderately heavy lifting up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds).
  • The employee must obtain and maintain a successful Background Investigation.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) High Voltage Electrician (Motor Vehicle Operator)~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common duties as appropriate safely performing high voltage electrical work in all weather conditions working with high voltages. I have installed, diagnosed, repaired and maintained all commonly used electric power generation and distribution equipment without the need for special advice. I have the ability to determine types and sizes of wire, conduit, transformers, and safe operation of distribution systems; I can safely determine the diameter and depth of pole holes utilizing a drilling auger to install poles; Perform rigging on high voltage motors, transformers and compressors; Test cable systems for continuity, resistance, voltage, shorts, opens, grounds, or insulation breakdowns utilizing electrical test devices as voltmeter, ohmmeter, etc.; Checked the condition of transformers and switches while testing insulating oil for breakdown and contamination; and can read and understand commonly used drawings and diagrams of distribution networks and equipment interconnections. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Ability To Do The Work Of The position Without More Than Normal Supervision
  • Physical Effort - Frequently performs moderately heavy lifting, pulling, and carrying of equipment and material weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds) and occasionally, they lift or pull heavy cables and equipment weighing more than 23 kilograms (50 pounds) with the help of weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers. Employee will use lock and tackle, pulleys, or other lifting devices. Employee is required to crouch, stand, kneel,
    and stoop while installing, repairing, or testing electrical equipment in confined spaces such as enclosed switch gear, or in structures such as overhead bus and conduit assemblies. Works from aerial bucket trucks and poles, at ground level, and in trenches, or manholes. Work does require bending, stooping, climbing, and standing for long periods while installing, repairing, and testing electrical equipment in manholes and on overhead
    distribution lines.
  • Working Conditions - Work is performed both inside and outside. Employee is exposed to danger from explosions of equipment and cables in manholes and vaults, as well as danger from high voltage electrical shock, burns from solder, broken bones, cuts, and bruises. Exposed to heat and noise when working in substations or power-generating facilities, to extremes of weather when working outdoors, and to unpleasant odors and wet slippery surfaces when working in manholes. Subject to electrical burns while working around high voltage electrical lines, broken bones from falls from poles, and strains from awkward working positions. Exposed to chemicals such as insulating oil from transformers and oil switches. Employee is required to wear protective clothing, which may include, but is not limited to ear plugs, safety hats, nonconductive gloves, and safety shoes.
