Electrical Design Engineer
Stockport / Windsor / Flexible UK Locations

This role sits in our UK and Ireland services business where we build, operate, and maintain clean energy assets to help large public sector and industrial customers decarbonise to meet net zero targets. This includes sourcing green energy, providing project design and delivery expertise, financing options, and industry leading operational capabilities to deliver energy efficiency and save customers money, helping them balance the demands of planet and profit.
The role entails hybrid working with attendance if required at suitable nearest offices (Windsor/Stockport), circa monthly currently. Candidates must be prepared to travel UK-wide on occasion as site surveys and installation quality checks will be expected.
The Role
Exciting opportunity for a self-motivated electrical/EC&I engineer, with experience to contribute to project delivery from day one, but also desire to grow with the team in capability and responsibility. The role is in our Public Sector business, delivering energy efficiency and decarbonisation projects for large Public Sector bodies, principally the NHS. Working alongside a Lead Engineer you will be responsible for preparing electrical and control engineering deliverables. Your contribution will span the full project lifecycle from site surveys and initial concept, through detailed design, to commissioning support and handover.
Some of your accountabilities will be:
- Design of distributed generation and renewable energy schemes
- Detailed design of LV distribution systems
- Specification of HV installation works
- Design for compliance with GB Distribution Code (G99, G100 etc)
- Electrical calculations including load estimation, equipment sizing, cable & protection device selection
- Selection & specification of electrical equipment for integration with CHP, heat pumps and district heating systems
- Preparing construction-ready detailed designs: single line diagrams, control panel drawings, block cable diagrams, cable schedules, lists of materials and design risk assessments
- Defining scope of works and interfaces for subcontractor packages
- Proficiency with AutoCAD LT and Amtech (or equivalent)
- Experience of EPLAN will be an advantage
- Knowledge of legislation, standards, safe working practice and environmental best practice.
- Knowledge of control systems for power management and building controls (PLCs, SCADA, BMS, etc)
- Knowledge of earthing and/or lightning protection an advantage
- Knowledge of fire detection, machinery safety or metering an advantage
The Person
You are ideally from a background in electrical design engineering in building services, renewables or a related industry. We would like you to have some of the following skills, competencies and experience:
Soft Skills
- Capable of working to procedures. Both Client and CBS.
- Ensure that drawings are produced quickly and accurately in a consistent format with the minimum of supervision.
- Capable of fitting in to a dept. that is dynamic that has high expectations of meeting targets.
- A collaborative approach is essential - must be a good team worker, prepared to share knowledge and assist others to improve their skills
- Sound presentation and communications skills
- Must be able to write clear and concise English, e.g., technical sections in tender response documents
- Willing to be flexible in the role, e.g., assist the Sales, Commercial, Procurement or Construction teams, where required
- Will be personally well-organised and be able to prioritise work in line with CBS interests
Specific Competencies
1. Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and energy technologies, with some post-education experience.
2. Attention to detail: Ability to apply a thorough approach to each stage of the design process from concept to detail design.
3. Cross-functional communication: Ability to communicate across all levels and have the ability to converse and collaborate across all internal and external teams of varying technical or commercial bias to enable a successful outcome.
4. Safety in Design: Able to comply with CDM 2015 regulations and contribute towards design safety reviews and design risk assessments.
Education
Degree / ONC/ HNC in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
