Role Summary:
AIXTRON is a world leading manufacturer of semiconductor equipment and the AIXTRON Ltd facility in Cambridgeshire manufactures key MOCVD (Metal Organic Chemical Vapour Deposition) systems for the group. Our MOCVD systems are used to produce (opto) electronics for 5G, fibre communications, lasers, LEDs for displays and power electronics for electric vehicles and chargers.

As part of a multi-disciplined team and a modern Engineering department, this role involves the continuous improvement of the Company’s world leading products through leading-edge electrical design. The Electrical Design (Controls) Engineer will be expected to implement effective solutions to ensure the Company’s MOCVD systems remain at the forefront of technology whilst keeping up to date with current standards and legislation.
Key Responsibilities:
- The generation of detailed electrical power distribution and control system diagrams suitable for manufacture. Provision of accurate BOM’s reflecting the diagrams generated.
- Contribute to cross-functional development project teams for development projects/new products.
- Development, planning and specification of electronic control systems, sub-systems and components.
- Covering fields of control, drive and sensor technology, pneumatic control, PLC and safety systems.
- Adopt the working practices of a modern engineering office and a company wide quality system.
- Projects are conducted at both Group and local levels so some travel is expected.
- Provide support to production with issues identified during manufacture.
- Support of essential design changes.
Qualifications, skills and Experience:
- Engineering degree in a electrical discipline or equivalent qualification/experience (minimum HNC + experience)
- Good knowledge in the fields of field-bus systems (DeviceNet, Ethercat) and PLC control.
- Good knowledge in the design of drive systems, pneumatic control, and automation technology.
- Experience in control of electro-pneumatic/mechanical systems, 3-phase power distribution and heater control systems.
- Practical knowledge of relevant legislation, directives and standards for the design of machinery.
- Professional registration with a relevant Engineering body encouraged and preferred.
- Good experience of E-Plan software preferred
- Microsoft office capable (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
- Experience in ERP systems (SAP)
- Accurate, thorough, consistent, pro-active, assertive, organised
- Good communication skills
- Team player, able to work within multi-disciplinary teams
Working Conditions / Environment:
- Office/Lab based role at AIXTRON Ltd, Buckingway Business Park, Anderson Road, Swavesey, Cambridge CB24 4FQ, United Kingdom
- Some travel will be required to our corporate headquarters in Germany or to key customer sites
