Environment, Health & Safety Advisor (12 months FTC)

We’ve had an exciting opportunity released working within our EHS R&D team where we’re looking to bring on an Environmental Health & Safety Advisor supporting our Industrial Hygiene to join on a secondment, full-time basis. You’ll be joining a growing team where you’ll have the opportunity to further develop your skillset and leave your stamp within the team while supporting GSK’s R&D scientific teams on high priority projects and across of all UK R&D sites.

As the successful candidate you’ll provide a wide range of Environment, Health and Safety services (focusing on the management of hazardous substance) to the R&D business to provide direction, coordination, and delivery relevant to business needs, support GSK’s objectives and maintain compliance with regulations. You will provide specialist technical services to the research and development groups within the region.

In this role you will:

  • Provide EHS services and solutions to the R&D business area and EHS hazardous substances programme, that meet legal and corporate requirements whilst also satisfying the evolving needs of the business
  • Develop and support on assigned EHS&S Technical areas (e.g. Chemical Agents).
  • Advise R&D on required controls to mitigate risk when working with health hazards (e.g. chemical agents) in the workplace, including LEV and as a last resort PPE/RPE.
  • Review chemical/COSHH risk assessments for handling of chemicals and pharmaceutical materials
  • Provide support to the industrial hygiene monitoring plan for the site including noise monitoring and exposure air monitoring
  • Provide support in managing the PPE and RPE programme for the site and responding to any PPE/RPE requests/queries that arise
  • Support in carrying out ad-hoc qualitative/quantitative mask fit tests where required and manage mask fit testing for the onsite Emergency Response Team
  • Build strong relationships- partnering with R&D and support functions to provide EHS&S advice and guidance on a wide range EHS&S topic area.
  • Actively deliver the GSK EHS&S programme including development and delivery of procedures and training; conducting audits and monitoring; supporting and advising on risk assessment and mitigation; reporting and communication of EHS data, trending and investigation of incidents and near misses; embedding of GSK’s Life Saving Rules and supporting other R&D initiatives
  • Support the implementation and embed and grow the EHS&S Internal Control Framework.
  • Work effectively with other key EHS professionals to deliver an efficient EHS Service to business partners, facilities, and project management staff. Influencing individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and responsibilities including scientific staff, senior managers, and outside regulatory agency personnel in EHS matters.
  • Assess and minimize a wide variety of EHS risks within a complex and diverse GSK organisation to develop and refine local management systems in line with emerging requirements.
  • Prioritize activities undertaken by this position and manage projects concurrently in a rapidly changing environment. Consult with, inform, and influence colleagues and customers in their EHS decision making within region

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science or Engineering
  • Highly successful track record (over a period of time) in an EHS advisor role and proven ability interacting credibly with senior R&D Managers.
  • Strong ability to act as a motivator of change for customers, to facilitate the creation and development of pro-active EHS culture within R&D and an organisation that supports this.
  • Proven ability to think and act strategically and engage in long term planning.
  • Good knowledge of safety & environment legislation, and an awareness of current developments and emerging scientific issues.
  • Proven track record in dealing with business critical EHS issues and coming up with and implementing pragmatic value added solutions in a timely way to the satisfaction of customers.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • Employee Health & Safety post-graduation certification (ie. Cert, Dip, BSc, MSc or IOSH)
  • Credentialed in a specific topic area is highly desired (eg, CIH, CSP)
  • Experience in pharmaceutical manufacturing
  • Experience in complex regulatory framework and multiple regulatory bodies
