The Opportunity
We currently have an opening for a permanent Efficiency Engineer to join the team based at Heysham 2 Power Station within the Operations department.
The role is required to understand, control & optimise the operational performance of the power station against our key business objective – safe, reliable, efficient generation, over extended operating lifetime. The engineers are required to develop & apply specialist knowledge in the areas of power plant output and cycle efficiency.
We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who is organised, self-motivated with a positive attitude and able to work under their own initiative. You will need drive, a sense of ownership and a “can do” attitude. You will be trained as to why nuclear is special and be required to demonstrate the highest standards of nuclear professionalism and safety.
The Efficiency Engineers report to the operations Technical Support Group Head, who in turn reports directly to the Operations Manager.

Pay, benefits and culture
The salary range is between £40,069 - £71,779 with terms and conditions covered by the EDF Energy Nuclear Generation Company Agreement. The starting salary for this appointment will be dependent of your existing salary, competence, experience and qualifications. You will receive 28 days annual holiday plus bank holidays, incremental and competency-based progression and a defined contributions pensions scheme.

What you’ll be doing
Alongside reporting to the Operations Technical Support Group Head you will also be required to carry out the following duties:
- Monitor plant performance using a wide array of data sources and technology, to ensure optimum performance.
- Inform key operational decision making from a specialist perspective & provide advice on generation issues.
- Work within teams & form key relationships with other departments / stakeholders.
- Develop both personal and team knowledge in specialist areas.
- Analysing plant performance data for plant output and cycle efficiency problems and trends.
- Advising the operations department on target operational parameters
- The management / supervision of specific plant tests
- Performing plant investigation and tests
- Preparation of performance data for company requirements
- Maintaining adequate records of plant operating results
- Effectively maintain links with other groups on site and external companies
- Providing operational documentation to support efficient plant operation, undertake boiler analysis for compliance with safety case limits and providing advice where necessary
- Plant testing and analysis
Who are you
You should have as a minimum a relevant HNC (or equivalent). Candidates with a relevant degree may have an advantage.- The successful applicant should have relevant technical knowledge of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics.
- Individuals should demonstrate a positive approach to work, taking ownership for efficiency losses, plant defects and improvement plans.
- Teamwork is an essential part of the role, within the operations department and other sections on stations, as well as contributing to the fleet efficiency peer group.
- Good written and verbal communications are key for advising the plant operators on plant optimisation and faults
Applicants should have a track record of delivering results within a technical or engineering function. Candidates should also have a flexible approach and the ability to work well as part of a team. Equally important is a proactive approach with the enthusiasm, determination and the ability to improve the performance of Heysham 2 Power Station.
