Education Developer (Inclusive Education)

The Learning and Teaching Academy is offering an exciting opportunity for an experienced education developer specialising in inclusive education to join their specialist team.

The role will help to deliver enhancements within learning, teaching and the student learning experience at Cardiff University through specialist advice, guidance and consultancy to academic schools as well as leading the development and roll out packages of education development support, CPD, resources, activities and initiatives that support the development of inclusive and diverse educational experiences.

The post holder will work in close collaboration with the Academic Partner for Inclusive Education and in partnership with schools, programme teams, specialist colleagues from the Learning and Teaching Academy as well as other professional departments to support transformation in inclusive practices across Cardiff University.

The post-holder will be a key member of the Inclusive Education Working Group which is supporting the delivery of the University’s Inclusive Education Framework through its work in:

  • developing guidance and resources to support colleagues in developing their inclusive practice

  • building (and sustaining) Communities of Practice to raise awareness and facilitate discussion about inclusive education,

  • embedding inclusivity within structures, processes and practices.

The role holder will be expected to have, or be willing to develop, expertise in inclusive education related to race equality and will specialise in work supporting the University’s ambition of closing the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic awarding gaps.

Through this work the role holder will support the University in its efforts to become an anti-racist organisation and will make an important contribution to the delivery of The Way Forward - Education and Students Sub-Strategy and the University’s Strategic Equality Plan. The role will involve working in partnership with students and staff from across the University to identify and disseminate best practice, and to support changes to practice to enhance the inclusivity of educational provision at Cardiff University

This is a full-time post, fixed term for 2 years.

Salary: £36,333 – £43,155 per annum (Grade 6). Appointments will usually be at the bottom of the grade. Internal secondments are welcomed (subject to approval from home departments).

Job Description

Key Duties

  • Work in close partnership with the Academic Lead for Inclusive Education, and others involved in the Inclusive Education project, to deliver the University’s new Inclusive Education Framework.
  • Take responsibility for delivering elements of the University’s Inclusive Education Framework related to race equality and supporting the University’s ambition to close the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic awarding gaps, to support the University in its efforts to become an anti-racist organisation
  • Work in partnership with students and staff from across the University to identify and disseminate best practice, and to support changes to practice to enhance the inclusivity of educational provision at Cardiff University
  • Provide expert professional advice and guidance on inclusive education issues, particularly in relation to awarding gaps and race equality, to senior colleagues and the wider academic community, using judgement and creativity to suggest the most appropriate course of action, ensuring complex and conceptual issues are understood.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of a suite of professional development events, workshops, resources and other education development activities relating to Inclusive Education, for Cardiff University staff.
  • Take responsibility for providing bespoke support for Schools and programme teams in enhancing their inclusive practice
  • Develop online resources, materials, and information to support the effective communication and implementation of good inclusive practice by academic staff and Schools.
  • Support work to ensure that considerations about diversity and inclusion are integrated fully into projects and activities related to curriculum and assessment design and the enhancement of the student educational experience.
  • Raise the profile of excellence in learning and teaching and the inclusive education project internally and externally by contributing to the planning and implementation of communications such as blogs and case studies, and events such as conferences.
  • Work collaboratively with students and colleagues from across the University to support enhancements in inclusive education and to engender the effective sharing of knowledge and practice.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with key contacts, developing appropriate communication links with the University’s College, Schools and professional service departments and outside bodies, as required, to ensure role objectives are met.
  • Plan and deliver specific small-scale projects and initiatives, co-ordinating and supervising project teams created as needed.
  • Develop and operate mechanisms to monitor and evaluate the impact of projects, workshops and resources on inclusive educational practices and the student learning experience, using findings to proactively change the delivery according to the needs of key stakeholders.
  • Undertake personal and professional development to enhance performance, keeping abreast of sector developments and engaging in scholarship of teaching and learning in collaboration with colleagues inside or outside the University.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education

  • Degree/NVQ 4 or equivalent Professional membership/experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Substantial experience of supporting academics in the area of inclusive education development and the enhancement of the student educational experience.

  • Ability to demonstrate professional knowledge of inclusive education practice within the sector, along with a good understanding of the diverse needs of students and how to address these to promote excellence in inclusive education design and delivery.

  • Experience of planning, designing and delivering professional development workshops, events and asynchronous resources.

Customer Service, Communication and Team Working

  • Evidence of ability to assimilate, analyse and communicate complex information in a clear, effective, tactful and accurate manner appropriate to the audience, in both oral and written form, including to non-specialist audiences.

  • Proven ability to explore the needs of academic staff across a range of disciplines, and to adapt advice, guidance or service accordingly to ensure a quality service is delivered.

  • Evidence of strong interpersonal skills coupled with the ability to work with staff and students; to work on own initiative as well as within a team; to build and maintain networks and to ensure dissemination of information.

Planning, Analysis and Problem solving

  • Evidence of ability to access and analyse a range of data from different information sources, to anticipate and resolve problems using initiative and creativity and identify and propose both practical and innovative solutions.

  • Evidence of the ability to plan, prioritise and organise own work, and to take responsibility for operational planning and implementation of project activities.

Desirable Criteria
  • Expertise in race equality and experience of projects/initiatives designed to minimise awarding gaps.

  • Postgraduate/Professional qualification in learning and teaching.

  • Fellowship/Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.

  • Experience of working in a Higher Education environment.

  • Fluency in Welsh, written and oral.

  • Experience working with a professional body.
