Job description
This employee provides professional consultative and technical assistance to farmers and landowners regarding a wide variety of soil and water conservation practices. Work includes field visits, observation and analysis of agricultural operations, data collection for existing land, water, and other natural resources, identification of natural resource concerns, development of solutions and best management practices to address natural resource concerns, and development and management of agricultural cost share contracts to address natural resource concerns.
This position will focus on assisting in the administration of the North Carolina Agricultural Cost Share Program(s), administering environmental education programs and outreach, and serving as a clerk to the District Board of Supervisors. Candidate will also assist with upkeep and rental of the no-till drill. Other duties will be assigned based on departmental needs.
A breakdown of the position of the position’s primary duties are as follows:
70% administering cost share programs and contracts,
15% serving as clerk to the board,
15% environmental education and outreach.
Work is performed under the supervision of the Resource Conservationist and the District Board of Supervisors. Work is reviewed by the Resource Conservationist, the District Board of Supervisors, and the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Division of Soil & Water.
Candidate will be required to achieve Job Approval Authority (JAA) for at least two Best Management Practices (BMPs) within two years of hire.
This position involves field work, and the candidate must be comfortable working in outdoor conditions such as hot weather, inclement weather, bugs, traversing steep and/or uneven terrain, proximity to livestock, etc.
In limited instances, overnight travel or extended working hours will be required.
Requirements:Minimum requirements for this position shall be one of the following: Associate degree in agriculture, biology, environmental education, forestry, natural resources, or a related field OR a high school diploma with five years of experience in agriculture, biology, environmental education, forestry, natural resource, or a related field. A Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
The ideal candidate will have a rudimentary knowledge concerning agricultural operations and/or natural resource management. They will be proactive in assisting the department grow, and understand the value of personal responsibility, mutual respect, teamwork, integrity, effective communications, and be motivated.
Candidate must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license and may be required at times to use personal vehicle for field work.
