BMJ seeks an enthusiastic individual to join its flagship publication, The BMJ, as an Editorial Production Assistant. BMJ seeks an enthusiastic individual to join its flagship publication, The BMJ, as an Editorial Production Assistant. This is a great opportunity to work with editors, authors, reviewers, and the wider department on the submission and peer review process of an international journal.
- Providing an excellent service to prospective and submitting authors from around the world, helping them navigate the submission process and ensuring they receive timely decisions on their manuscripts.
- Updating section and technical editors on article status, and following up with authors and peer reviewers as necessary.
- Working with and supporting the editors on various projects, such as organising manuscripts in the submission system for themed issues.
- Liaising with authors and commissioning editors regarding article guidelines, deadlines, conflicts of interest, transfers, appeals, APC payments for accepted articles, and ad hoc journal policy queries.
- Preparing accepted articles for additional production work by technical editors in readiness for publication.
- Working with colleagues in the BMJ Journals’ Operations team on ScholarOne system updates, internal alignment and day-to-day process improvements.
- Overseeing the publication of prepublication history files for published articles.
- Providing data and reports and attending meetings as needed, and, as part of the Publishing Services editorial production team, assisting team colleagues as needed.
- Previous experience in a publishing office environment
- Intermediate or above in Excel, Word and use of Google tools
- Experience with ScholarOne or a similar submission system would be an advantage
- Excellent organisational, customer service, communication, and reporting skills
- Excellent time management/prioritisation skills
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team (hybrid working environment)
