Editorial Assistant, Bloomsbury Children’s Fiction
The opportunity
This is a rare opportunity to join the Bloomsbury Children's fiction team for the first step in an editorial career. The successful candidate will be working on a list packed with bestselling and award-winning books for readers from the age of six to young adult. This role offers the opportunity to learn about all aspects of children’s publishing, working closely with the children’s editorial, production and design teams, developing core editorial skills and providing administrative support for the department.
This role also provides PA support to the Editor-in-Chief of the children’s list.
The role
This role would suit candidates who are starting out in an editorial career. They will be passionate about children's books, curious, keen to learn and enjoy a challenge.
A core member of the fiction publishing team, key responsibilities of the role include:
- Providing administrative, organisational and editorial support to the department
- Managing the Editor-in-Chief’s diary and expenses
- Creating and maintaining bibliographic data, schedules and publishing programmes
- Assisting in the preparation of editorial content for sales and marketing materials
- Organising and minuting key departmental meetings
- Helping with copy-editing or proofreading of content as required
- Liaising with authors, illustrators and agents as required
- Over time, supporting editors with creative editorial tasks including briefing illustrations and checking layouts, drafting cover copy, reading submissions
Knowledge, skills and experience
The successful candidate will be well-organised with excellent communication skills. They should be quick to learn, self-motivated, and able to prioritise tasks and manage time effectively.
A meticulous eye for detail and an ability to demonstrate accurate spelling, grammar and punctuation are important, but above all the successful candidate will be a book lover with a genuine passion for children’s fiction.

This role is a full-time permanent position with an annual salary of £25,000
The role based at our London office 50 Bedford Square, London, WC1B 3DP on a hybrid working pattern of 2 days office based / 3 days home based (or fully office based if preferred). Allocated office days for this role are: Monday and Tuesday.
As an Assistant role, this position is eligible for Bloomsbury’s Rental Deposit Loan Scheme. To assist candidates who want to start and to establish a career in publishing, Bloomsbury offers an interest-free rental deposit to support securing somewhere to live. The rental deposit loan can be up to £3,000 and will be paid back over 2 years.
