Job description
Application Window Closing Date: Sunday, 13 August 2023
Princeton University Press (PUP) seeks a motivated, detail-oriented, and highly organised individual to support two editors. The Editorial Assistant (EA) will assist in the acquisition, development, and publishing of distinctive and outstanding books in the social sciences and history and will serve as a liaison both between authors and the Press, and between departments within the Press. The EA will take a central and collaborative role in the day-to-day management of the lists and will gain essential and detailed experience on all aspects of editorial and other processes involved in book publishing. The EA will be responsible for maintaining data integrity for all books on the lists, anticipating and contributing to the efficient flow of materials and information, and must be able to facilitate effective communication within the organisation and beyond.
We seek a colleague who demonstrates curiosity and enthusiasm for scholarly publishing. This is a full-time position with comprehensive UK benefits. PUP is a staff choice organisation, and the EA will be able to choose either 100% remote within the UK, hybrid, or full-time from the 99 Banbury Road Oxford, UK office. Office days are flexible and in coordination with the reporting manager.
- A genuine interest in and intellectual engagement with the publication of scholarly books.
- Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to maintain excellent professional demeanour and be able to convey information accurately. An evaluation such as a written work product may be required at the time of interview.
- Excellent time-management and organisational skills, and the ability to manage detail-oriented projects with overlapping deadlines.
- Ability to work independently toward the collaborative and common goals of the lists, the editorial department, and the Press.
- An interest in social science or humanities preferred, but no proficiency is required.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- Computer proficiency, including with databases, Microsoft Office, and Adobe Acrobat.
- Some travel to conferences or to cover publicity events required.
- Enthusiasm for collaboration, and commitment to PUP’s professional code of conduct, located at https://press.princeton.edu/about/mission-values.
- This requisition is for a locally hired position in the UK. Candidates must have current legal authorisation to work immediately in the United Kingdom. PUP will not attempt to obtain Immigration and labour sponsorship for any applicants.
PUP is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of our publishing. Individuals who are members of groups underrepresented in academic publishing (which is, according to research by Lee & Low, historically a majority white, straight, cisgender, nondisabled and neurotypical industry) are encouraged to apply.
Base Salary: £23,000. Starting salary may be negotiable based on relevant skills and prior experience.
Application Instructions: Interested candidates should send a covering letter* with salary requirements, and a CV to PUP’s application website via the direct apply URL. Closing date for applications, Sunday, 13 August 2023.
- Please include in covering letter a description of what you are currently reading and what is on your “to read” list. Note that the cover letter is valued and reviewed closely as a writing sample and an assessment for communication skills.
