Job description

What you’ll be doing

You will be working as part of a close and friendly team, independently project managing and editing books that have already been acquired. You will support the commissioning team from the point of acquisition up to publication: helping to develop and nurture the authors under your care and support them in realising their vision for each book. You will have deep experience of editorial processes across narrative non-fiction genres, including memoirs, health and personal development. You will be adept at managing complex projects: undertaking structural edits when needed, drawing up and keeping track of schedules, fielding approval from multiple stakeholders (both internal and external), briefing libel reads and finding solutions for any and all setbacks in order to keep your books on track.

Quercus has a culture of openness and engagement – and we value team spirit and communication very highly. You will maintain excellent relationships with internal departments including Design, Marketing, Publicity and Sales – to ensure they have everything they need in order to make our books bestsellers.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for someone with bags of energy, organisational skills and focus, who is confident and autonomous when it comes to taking ownership of books and seeing them through to publication. We need an excellent communicator who uses the right mix of warmth, diplomacy and firmness to get the best from authors, agents and in-house teams – and ultimately help drive the success of the Non-fiction team!

What we offer

Our staff are our greatest asset and our benefits reflect this. In addition to 28 days annual leave days per year + bank holidays, we have an extensive list of benefits that include: a wide-ranging training library, development programmes including mentoring, Cycle to Work vouchers, Private Medical Insurance, eye care vouchers, up to 70% off book purchases, a charity book shelf, 2 community days per year, many employee networks to join, summer hours (finishing at 1pm on Fridays during the summer months!), season ticket loans, rent deposit loans, generous pension schemes and much more!

The role will be based at our London office, Carmelite House, with a blend of in-office (3 days) and homeworking (2 days) per week.

Our Commitment

Hachette employs people on the basis of their abilities. We aim to attract and develop talent from a base as broad as the world of readers we want to reach, with a wide and representative range of age, faith, disability, race, gender, sexuality and socio-economic, regional and cultural backgrounds.

If you are shortlisted and need us to make any adjustments to help you attend for interview, please let us know.

The Book Trade Charity offers financial support to people looking to enter the book trade but who may struggle to afford the costs of attending interviews and undertaking junior roles. For more information visit www.booktradeentrysupport.org

Who we are and what we do

Named Small Publisher of the Year and Publisher of the Year in its first decade in business, Quercus has quickly built a reputation as one of the UK’s most vibrant and creative publishing houses. Home to a wide range of bestsellers from The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck by Sarah Knight to Stories for Boys Who Dare to be Different by Ben Brooks, and from SAS Bravo Three Zero by Damien Lewis to The World According to Kaleb by Kaleb Cooper of Clarkson’s Farm, our Non-Fiction list is deliberately varied, carefully curated and always exciting.
