Our Water Resources team dream about the future and think about what actions we need to take to get us there - the role has a vast range of activities. From helping our Operational teams manage how we abstract water from rivers, reservoirs, and groundwater across our region, to thinking 25-years into the future to balance supply and demand – seeking the best outcome for our customers and the environment.

We want to firmly establish South West Water at the leading-edge of water resources management. We’re looking for someone who can help us develop and improve our models and systems to meet the sector’s future challenges.

We currently have a fantastic opportunity available for a Water Resources Planner/Modeller to join our team based in Exeter or Bristol. You will join us on a full-time, permanent basis, and in return, you will receive a competitive salary of £40,000 - £50,000 per annum (DOE) plus a range of excellent company benefits + rewards.

About the role:
In this role you will monitor and forecast our water source availability on a tactical and long-term basis, by designing and implementing company seasonal and annual strategies on water resource management, optimising the use of water resources to meet service levels, quality, cost and sustainability targets.

The Water Resources Planner/Modeller will be effective at communicating with internal and external stakeholders, to provide data and to ensure delivery of the water source management strategies set by the Water Resources team. This ongoing liaison includes work with operational colleagues and regulators, including oversight and management of the regulatory reporting work required for annual compliance with water abstraction legislation.

What you'll be doing:

  • Using extensive hydrological, water resources and company knowledge to provide specialist support and advice to the business on a range of water resources related matters.
  • Managing the operation and development of water resources system models, such as Miser.
  • Help to develop and integrate a new generation of modelling tools into our planning.
  • Using these water resources models to plan operational strategies, and future resource and infrastructure developments.
  • Overseeing the collection of the data and information on which water resources and operations models are based and ensuring that it is kept up-to-date.
  • Preparing and communicating water resources insight to inform the Company’s activities.
  • Providing insight to internal and external stakeholders
  • Managing/overseeing the updating and reviewing hydrological models.
  • Leading contribution to regulatory plans and reporting including the Drought Plan, Water Resources Management Plan and the water resources elements of the Business Plan and annual reporting.
  • Ensuring that general technical queries/hydrological enquiries from internal and external sources are responded to.
  • Drawing on depth of knowledge to contribute to and lead meetings with regulators and external stakeholders.

What we are looking for:

  • Considerable experience in water resources modelling and planning within the water industry
  • Strong experience of analysis of water resources and hydrological data
  • Extensive experience of use of complex water resources models, to inform decisions on water resources availability and operation of sources
  • Strong analytical /problem solving skills
  • Knowledge of the Water Industry
