Job Summary
The Managing Editor has responsibility for the operation of the academic journal office of two or more science journals. Liaises between editors, reviewers, authors, scholarly societies’ leadership, and the scholarly community, on behalf of the journals and the University of Chicago Press (UCP). Contributes to discussions of publishing strategies and editorial initiatives for the journals in cooperation with the UCP publication managers and other UCP staff.
Responsibilities
- Manages the operation of the academic journal offices of the Biological Bulletin and Physiology and Biochemical Zoology, or other similar journals. Oversees the peer review process and the day-to-day functions of the journal office, taking on routine tasks as needed. Tracks progress of manuscripts from submission through peer review to final decision and manages peer review pipeline.
- Ensures that all manuscripts are delivered on time, within page budget, and meet the standards of the University of Chicago Press. Works with production, editorial, electronic publishing, and peer-review support to troubleshoot and solve problems. Manages and tracks page charges, publication agreements, permissions requests, and perform other administrative management functions.
- Liaises between the Press, Editors, editorial board members, authors, and reviewers. Maintains and nurtures relationships with the scholarly societies associated with the journals. Responsibilities include daily and heavy correspondence with all stakeholders.
- Prepares monthly and annual reports of journal-wide statistics as needed.
- Represents the journal and the Press at academic meetings as needed.
- Collaborates with authors to resolve routine and moderate problems using existing procedures and to clarify meaning. Assists with quality control by proofreading edited manuscripts.
- Edits books, journals, or other written materials with some guidance from others. Establishes editing schedules.
- Performs other related work as needed.

Preferred Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Master's degree.
Experience:
- 5 year's experience in scholarly journal publishing.
- Familiarity with research in ecology, comparative biology, anatomy, morphology, reproductive biology, systematics, phylogenetics, biochemistry, evolutionary development, symbioses..
Technical Skills or Knowledge:
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite required. Knowledge of Adobe products, Editorial Manager, or another peer review software is strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of various social media platforms.
