About The Role
The Telegraph is a very busy 24 hour news operation publishing over multiple platforms. The managing editor’s office is responsible for the overall administration of the editorial department, particularly financial, people and strategic issues. It is also the main point of contact in managing the relationship between the editorial and commercial departments ensuring that the advertising, commercial content and commercial relationships we enter into are appropriate to the Telegraph brand. This extends from advertising through content partnerships to commerce initiatives. In addition this role will support the managing editor as necessary on projects and issues that arise.
Key Responsibilities
- Working with the advertising department to ensure that advertising is appropriate for the Telegraph brand
- Assessing and signing off Editorially Integrated Partnerships proposals to ensure they fit with the editorial strategy and standards of the Telegraph.
- Monitoring and managing editorial paginations and liaising with commercial and operations departments on newspaper construction.
- Ensuring labelling of commercial content makes its provenance clear to our audience.
- Working with editorial and commercial departments to develop content areas that would be appropriate for the consumer and attractive to commercial sponsors.
- Working with the Rewards department on editorial input into subscriber-facing and open events.
- Maintenance of editorial calendar that permits commercial departments to forward plan sales initiatives.
- Liaising with marketing department on internal adverts for Telegraph commerce and events.
- Ad hoc projects around general newsroom management and delivery of initiatives. This may involve contractual work.
- Support for training functions, particularly in relation to editorial’s interface with commercial.
- A strong background in journalism and a sound understanding of how editorial departments work.
- Strong people skills and the ability to deliver constructive outcomes to situations in which there are multiple conflicting views.
- Strong negotiator with a keen sense of when and how to compromise and when not to.
- Understanding the commercial basis of news organisations and the different revenue streams that they command.
- Familiarity with print and digital design, and able to define how commercial content should appear in order to meet our obligations to the subscriber and other readers.
- Numerate, and comfortable with complex financial information. Experience of running budgets successfully.
- Proven ability to deliver complex projects. A meticulous and clear planner.
- Clear and decisive, a good communicator of both good and bad news.
- Experience and comfort with contractual, legal and compliance matters.
- Experience in people management and HR principles
