We are now looking for a Deputy Features Editor to support the executive editor for features in taking editorial responsibility for features both in G2 and digitally, and deputising for them.
You'll commission and edit a full range of features, including deeply-researched investigations, such as our Empty Doorway and Lost to the Virus series; and agenda-setting interviews with everyone from actors to sports people to intellectuals to politicians, and those who simply have extraordinary stories, such as the subjects of our How we survive series.
You will also edit hard-hitting, news-pegged features; original and inspiring lifestyle pieces; columns by regulars including Zoe Williams, Arwa Mahdawi, Emma Beddington and Adrian Chiles; and our widely- and deeply-read ongoing series, which include A new start after 60, How we met, A moment that changed me and The pet I'll never forget. You will work on one-off special projects too, such as our recent Britain behaving badly, and innovative digital features that explore what can be achieved using data, visuals and immersive approaches.
About the Role
- Oversee features from idea to publication
- Originate innovative and original feature, opinion, interactive and multimedia ideas online and in print
- Think strategically and innovatively about how we approach features digitally and in print
- Commission staff and freelancers
- Establish good working relationships with colleagues and external contacts
- Deputise for the executive editor for features in their absence
- Edit copy to a high standard
- Show a deep understanding of what makes for good furniture, and how best to promote our features
About You
- Demonstrable experience working in a senior subediting or editor role
- Proven-track record of editing and commissioning
- Clear vision of the purpose and aims of Guardian features
- An eclectic range of interests and ideas
- Experience/understanding of editing for web
- Knowledge and appreciation of Guardian style
- Ideally, you'll have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to this role
