Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, hardworking Diver with a passion for aquatic animals, to join our dive team at Deep Sea world. This role is for a full-time diver with zoological / aquarist responsibilities.

Join the team at Scotland’s National Aquarium where we offer visitors the chance to experience the UK’s longest underwater viewing tunnel, mysterious coral reefs, majestic sharks and our amazing seal harbour. Over 40 displays, including the 4.5-million-litre Underwater Safari with its walkthrough tunnel, are home to hundreds of fascinating creatures, ranging from seals and seahorses to stingrays and giant sand tiger sharks. Located beneath the world-famous Forth Rail Bridge, Deep Sea World is the place for you!

Duties/ Responsibilities

Job Description

Through consideration of the visitor experience, fun, education, value, conservation awareness and animal welfare – employ Zoological strategies and an enthusiastic attitude to deliver the highest standard of maintenance and public shark dive operations throughout Deep Sea World (DSW) ensuring that Visitors are satisfied and want to return.

Duties/ Responsibilities

Animal Husbandry & Welfare

  • Take an active role in conducting animal feeds for our marine life, invertebrates, and seals
  • Consideration for the animal welfare of all animals in our care
  • Assist with diet preparation techniques to department standards
  • Assisting in keeping all records of fish movements, mortalities, feeding regimes and physical parameters
  • Responsible for reporting any issues regarding animals and exhibits to the Curator (duty manager in Curators absence) completing relevant paperwork.
  • Responsible for minor maintenance of Life Support Systems and reporting major faults to the Curator or Displays Supervisor
  • Ensure all exhibits are kept to company high standards are clean inside and out, meeting all protocols on feed, temperatures, habitat, space and natural environment.

Diving

Instructing or assisting Shark Encounters, Shark Dives, Shark Awareness, Junior Shark Encounters.

  • Encounters and other functions to PADI and HSE approved standards.
  • Scuba diving for shows, maintenance, training and collection.
  • Ensuring that all dive related paperwork is completed by the end of each day.
  • Supervising and Dive Tending for all Diving operations including training, maintenance, collection dives in a safe manner ensuring adequate supervision of divers and able to assist immediately when required.
  • Adherence to Health and Safety regulations including use of PPE when required.
  • Accurate logging of all dive operations including staff and public dives.
  • Maintaining personal dive log as required by HSE PADI regulations
  • Responsible for reporting any health and safety incidents to the Curator and Dive Officer
  • Reporting Equipment Malfunctions to the Dive Supervisor/Dive Officer
  • Correct rinsing, cleaning, storage, and basic maintenance of all Scuba Equipment following use.
  • To satisfactorily complete dive courses agreed with the Diver Officer
  • Active participation in all dive operations associated with the main tank and other exhibits including routine rescue scenarios.
  • Responsible for ensuring Annual HSE Dive Medical is always up to date.
  • Coordinate with Diver Officer to ensure annual PADI membership is always up to date.
  • Assist with monitoring, maintenance of scuba equipment.
  • Responsible for reporting any health and safety incidents to the Curator and Diver Officer.

Display Maintenance

  • Assist Aquarist team to maintain exhibits to a high standard
  • Assist with the intake pump as required
  • Ensure the highest possible standards of cleanliness are maintained through-out the attraction both inside and out.
  • Maintain clean, tidy and safe standards of all plant rooms, tool rooms, food prep areas and quarantine facilities

General Maintenance

  • Cleaning Changing Rooms
  • Keeping Dive Equipment areas tidy.
  • Maintain clean, tidy and safe standards of food prep and public diver areas.
  • Reporting shortage of consumables to line manager.
  • Ensure the highest possible standards of cleanliness are maintained throughout the attraction inside and out including glass viewing areas.

Customer Service

  • To be courteous, pleasant, and approachable at all times when dealing with the public in order to establish a lasting positive image of the aquarium.
  • Responsible for always delivering world class customer service.
  • To maintain a high satisfaction rate for diving courses either taught or assisting with.
  • Helping to prepare the aquarium for opening when required.

Other Duties

  • To attend training courses as required by the business and be available to assist at other sites if required.
  • Active and productive input into department meetings/discussions.
  • To actively sell/promote DSW Dive products to general visitors/divers.
  • To impart knowledge to the rest of the DSW team if deemed necessary and to assist in the training of new staff members if required.
  • Adhere to all company policies including Health & Safety & COSHH.
  • To be responsible for wearing the correct uniform including PPE where appropriate.
  • Responsible for representing DSW within the Zoological Community in a positive light
  • To do any other reasonable duty as required by the Dive Officer, Displays Supervisor, Curator, and the General Manager in accordance with the needs of the business.
  • From time to time the company or General Manager may make reasonable requests for you to undertake duties not necessarily covered in the above.

We are busiest during the weekends, bank holidays and school holidays therefore you will be required to work during these periods on a 5/7 rota basis.

About you!

Please note the following criteria are required to be successful in gaining this post and to be able to effectively undertake the duties required.

  • This is a professional level Diving position, and we require all candidates to be a minimum of PADI DIVEMASTER level or higher-lower certification levels cannot be considered due to the requirements for working as a diver.
  • Holds an up to date HSE medical certificate issued by AMED.
  • Holds a current first aid and oxygen provider certificate.
  • Knowledge of diving equipment to ensure correct maintenance is carried out in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • This is a hands on role. Skills in pipework and maintenance of life support systems and pumps would be advantageous.
  • Aquarium Husbandry knowledge/experience would be desirable
