District Manager, Durham Region
Title: District Manager
Reporting to: Regional Manager East
Location: Pickering, Ontario
Miller Waste Systems Inc. has been in operation since 1961. Miller is a leader in waste management and diversion, providing government and industries with a wide range of services in the provinces of Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Manitoba, Miller has 50 years’ experience in the waste management sector and operates out of 30 locations.
Responsibilities:
In the position of District Manager, the responsibilities of this individual will include, but are not limited to:
- You will oversee all Residential, Industrial Commercial and Institutional collections as well as the Material Recovery Centre (MRF) and Transfer Station.
- Direct reports will be an Operations Manager, Route Supervisors and Administration/Support staff.
- The District Manager will work closely with the District Equipment Manager to ensure all various types of equipment are maintained to Miller standards.
- Oversees and directs activities of District to ensure profitability and operational efficiency
- You will also work closely with sales department to grow current customer bases in the Industrial Commercial sector.
- The District Manager is responsible for the preparation of annual budgets and monthly financial reporting for the above locations as well as the preparation of quarterly forecasts.
- You will be responsible for controlling costs while looking for continuous improvements within your operation. In support of the Company’s growth strategy, you will actively participate in preparing new proposals for submission as well as negotiating existing contracts.

- Maintain cooperative working relationship with all departments
- Flexibility to address issues in a 24/7 environment
- Ensure district is fully staffed and maintains not only bench strength but a strong succession planning model
- As the District Manager you will be a member of various committees including the Joint Health and Safety Committee, the Employee Committee and Accident Review committee.
- You will need to maintain strong employee relations through effective communications and leadership.
- You will be involved in the monetary review process with the elected employee committees.
- You will also be required to liaison with Municipal staff and members of council in your respected areas.
- You will also ensure compliance of the companies’ policies and procedures and occupational health and safety regulations by holding employees accountable as well as provide a safe and welcoming working environment for all employees.
- Through your Operations Team, you will maintain accurate records which are readily available for the corporate office or external agencies.
- The ideal candidate must be a team player who is able to motivate and lead a diverse team of employees.
- Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, subordinates, Municipal staff, and the public
- You must be able to adapt to changes with critical thinking and problem-solving techniques.
- You are an independent thinker, who is self-motivating. Strong communication and conflict resolution skills are a must for this position.
- You are extremely proficient in Microsoft Windows, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook and will be very familiar with various types of equipment within the waste industry.
