Job description
Would you like to lead the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal? This is the most iconic Fundraising Campaign in the UK and part of the nation’s history. Working in unison with our Directors of Marketing, Fundraising and Remembrance you will drive forward the ‘Three Giants Fundraising Strategy” to strengthen and protect the largest and most respected annual public appeal.
At the same time, you will play an integral part in how society engages with remembrance each November, taking responsibility for modernising and ensuring that the Poppy Appeal retains its current standing well into the future.
The Poppy Appeal is RBL’s single most important fundraising activity and brings with it the potential to impact hugely on both our welfare and remembrance activity.
We are looking for a Director of Poppy Appeal to drive the appeal forward strategically, based on a defined need for change across four key enablers of future success.
People: Our volunteers are invaluable, and we need to ensure we develop a contemporary, continuously improving volunteering proposition.
Technology: Driving and testing change so that the right technical and digital solutions are adopted to enhance and modernise the management of the appeal each year
Logistics: Adopting a commercially focused approach to provide our volunteers with the best merchandise that supports this historic Appeal
Results focused: Setting clear direction for performance of annual delivery and longer-term planning, building a results focused approach to achieving targets across our workforce and volunteers.
You will provide leadership which empowers forward planning based on data, collaboratively and innovatively in line with the RBL’s 3 Giant’s Fundraising Strategy.
Come and be part of the leading Armed Forces charity, making a difference to the lives of those who have served to keep us safe and protect our way of life.
If successful, the main duties of the role include:
- In conjunction with the Executive Director, engaging and motivating staff in the RBL ‘One Legion’ corporate strategy and the ‘Three Giants’ fundraising strategy to deliver strong performance, providing operational oversight, challenge and direction.
- Managing, reporting and evaluating performance, progress and achievements to meet the strategic objectives and deliver circa £50m gross annually (in conjunction with the RBL’s Fundraising team)
- Supporting the Heads of Departments in developing annual business plans and priorities including setting targets and budgets aligned to strategic objectives.
- Working with stakeholders at all levels in the organisation, up to the Executive Board and Board of Trustees, ensuring their needs are met and that they are appropriately informed of issues, risks and headline activity.
- Leading cultural change, improving business processes and building partnerships internally and externally to strengthen and protect the Poppy Appeal.
- Direct line management of five Heads of Department, and responsible for circa 120 staff ensuring that BAU activities are delivered according to expectations set through the budgeting process.
Why Apply?

At the same time, you will direct the leadership team in the implementation of people, process, technology and partnership solutions that strengthen and protect the appeal for the future.
You will be working for the largest Armed Forces charity and will be proud of how we support those in our community, past and present who need help today. Here at RBL, we aim to support our people and their wellbeing, with a package including generous paid holiday allowance and pension scheme contributions, and a range of optional benefits and discounts.
You will be expected to travel regularly in the course of your work, including meetings at our London hub, Aylesford Logistics base and other less frequent visits to regional hubs.
