Director of Data Full time / Part time Salary: £79,804 - £102,949 pa Location: Flexible ed to our Wilmslow, London, Edinburgh, Cardiff or Belfast office, however, through hybrid working we offer flexible home and office-based working opportunities. There will be times when you will be expected to attend the office to collaborate with colleagues or travel due to business need. Digital, Data and Technology The ICO's Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) team provides the devices, software, networks and infrastructure that our people use every day. We operate the ICO.org.uk website that attracts over half a million visits every month. We run the data platform and services that provide insight and will support increasing automation. We manage critical enterprise applications such as our case management, finance and HR systems that run our business. And we make sure the ICO is defended from cyber attacks to keep our data, people and customers safe. Most excitingly, we're in the middle of a transformation that will modernise our technological capabilities. This doesn't just mean that we're investing in innovative tech, though. About the role Reporting to the Executive Director Digital, Data and Technology, you will develop and deliver the ICO's Enterprise Data Strategy, championing and developing data's role as a strategic enterprise asset. A new role for the ICO, you will ensure the optimum management, use and exploitation of data, and develop technical capabilities for data management, data governance and data analytics. You will lead the delivery of value from data with a data-driven mindset, and will play a key role in the DDaT and senior leadership teams. Develop and execute the Enterprise Data Strategy for using and protecting data as a strategic asset across the ICO and the wider public sector. Develop the ICO's data platform, including data warehousing, data integration, Big Data, data analytics as well as technologies for data governance, data science and AI/ML, in line with organisational needs and opportunities. Develop the ICO's own information governance capabilities, including ensuring the right processes, policies, activities, controls, roles and responsibilities are in place to manage the ICO's data risk, while unlocking opportunities to use data in innovative ways. Measure organisation-wide data maturity, and developing and delivering projects and programmes to increase data maturity sustainably. Establish data literacy and a data culture across the ICO. Deliver tangible value from the ICO's data and data capabilities from descriptive, diagnostic, predictive and prescriptive analytics. Manage and develop a team of data professionals across data engineering, governance and analytics. About you Substantial experience relevant to the role requirements, accumulated through any combination of academic or vocational qualifications or experience. Experience of developing and implementing a data strategy within a medium-sized or large organisation. Experience of developing and operating data platforms including data warehousing, Big Data and data integration as well as technology used for data governance, analytics and AI / ML, both on-premise and cloud-based. Experience of data governance approaches and operations, including for data quality, metadata management, master data management, records management and cataloguing. Experience of delivering data use cases with tangible value for areas including customer experience, operational efficiency or product development. Extensive experience of managing people. Able to develop and nurture teams of data professionals to high standards. Knowledge of the public sector and regulatory environment, or clear appreciation of specifics and complexities and how they would influence the role. Commercial acumen, able to develop compelling and realistic business cases to support data investments. Knowledge of the data protection and privacy landscape, regulations and obligations for data practitioners. Able to deal with complexity and ambiguity, creative problem solving and developing innovative solutions. Understanding of wider DDaT profession and practices and their relationship with Data. Experience of using adaptive methodologies such as Agile. Excellent communications and motivational skills. Able to communicate complex data insights simply and with impact.
