LOCATION: Edinburgh with regular travel across Scotland and to London. The Scottish Government operates a flexible hybrid approach, attendance at the office will be required to meet the needs of the business and to build team and stakeholder relationships. The exact pattern would be agreed but the expectation would likely be 2-3 days per week in the office.

As a key adviser to Ministers, your primary responsibility will be to provide assurance around the delivery of education and justice system services. The Scottish Government’s focus on reducing re-offending and embedding a victim-centred agenda is key to the role. The key national performance outcomes you will lead towards are:

As Director General you will connect with a wide range of stakeholders across organisations and boundaries, building coalitions to translate strategic vision into action.
Delivering results – You are self-aware and self-motivated, using your own initiative to take forward actions and achieve goals. Strong evidence of leading and delivering against challenging commitments, responding quickly to changing situations and approaching challenges with flexibility, responsiveness and creativity. Relationship Management and Influence – You have a track record of securing the confidence of senior colleagues andstakeholders across an organisation and wider stakeholder landscape. You quickly build credibility and are confident you can do so with Scottish Ministers, operating with sensitivity and authenticity within a political environment. You work in collaboration, building and maintaining positive, trusted and effective partnerships through persuasion, advocacy and challenge. You will also have the ability to develop meaningful coalitions with business and industry stakeholders.
Strategy – Strong track record of setting vision and direction and translating broad strategic goals into clear and measurable performance targets. You will have a highly developed strategic thinking ability to gain an in-depth insight surrounding the issues of the Scottish economy. You will have the ability to translate strategic objectives and analytical evidence into practical interventions that improve performance. You will consider the bigger picture and consider the wider factors and long term implications of decisions and recommendations.
Governance – You will be both personally accountable and collectively responsible for managing the level of pressure in your portfolio and across the Scottish Government. You will challenge your teams to identify options to manage pressures and find savings which will be tested in challenge meetings with the Permanent Secretary. You will effectively balance the needs of many stakeholders while achieving your business objectives. You will also act as Senior Responsible Officer on a wide range of major projects.
