Job description
Position Responsibilities:
- Develops and implements all accounting, reporting and lease administration policies, procedures, and methods. Designs and implements appropriate internal control systems.
- Maintains oversight of all general accounting activities( property, development and corporate), including maintenance of general ledgers, job cost accounting, financial statements, expense participation processes, tax packages, and financial reporting and analysis.
- Responsible for supervision/coaching and leadership of Accounting Group consisting of approximately 20 team members (plus five outsourced employees) and directly supervises three Assistant Controllers/Controllers. Responsible for overall hiring, retention and structure of resources including outsourced and internal for the Accounting Group.
- Maintains oversight and ensures timeliness and accuracy of all external partner reporting, including projections, GAAP reporting, external audits, and tax returns, including communication with external partners on regular basis.
- Maintains oversight of company-wide budget process, including related reporting for all properties and corporate entities. Reviews budgets for high level trends and issues and works with CAO, Portfolio Management, and other stakeholders on overall budget changes.
- Coordinates external GAAP audit and tax compliance for partnerships, including detailed review of financial statements and related footnotes disclosures.
- Organizes and plans so that departmental projects and goals are completed accurately and timely.
- Coordinates preparation, design, and analysis of reports which summarize and forecast company business activity and financial position.
- Maintains relationships and coordinates reporting to/from parent company and external partners.
- Actively participates as a member of Granite’s Management Committee and Leadership Team. Offers recommendations for improvements in the Company’s accounting/organizational processes, operational procedures, and reporting functions.
- Reviews all partnership/JV documents and contracts for acquisitions/dispositions. Coordinates with CAO and Investments Group on all closings, including prorations, closing statements, and related legal documents.
- Assists CAO and CFO on capital transactions, including loan and JV closings.
- Solves technical accounting issues related to general accounting, GAAP, and reporting.
- Assists CAO as needed and work on special projects.
- Ad hoc responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
- Minimum of 12 years of related accounting experience
- CPA required
- Public accounting audit experience required (Big 4 experience preferred)
- Controller in commercial real estate experience required
- Strong technical experience in real estate investment and JV accounting required
- Advanced Excel skills required
- Proficiency in JD Edwards preferred
- Self-starter with strong coaching/mentoring skills
