£37,744 to £42,631 plus a Location allowance of £1,721. You will receive £37,744 the band minimum. Progress to the band maximum of £42,631 will be via incremental progression.

Location: Vacancies are for multiple sites across the MPS

This is an exciting opportunity for successful candidates to join the Met Police Service's Digital Forensics department as a Digital Forensic Technician.

We are looking for talented, enthusiastic individuals to undertake digital forensic examinations on a variety of digital devices; supporting the MPS' mission to keep London safe. Examining devices, such as mobile phones or computers, to help officers further their investigations, your impact will be felt on a daily basis.

The role is rotational between the Digital Forensic Hubs which are situated across the MPS estate meaning a wide variety of knowledge and experience can be gained every day. DF Technicians complete their initial training at Lambeth HQ prior to be posted to a Hub.

Rotations are released every 6 months with at least 4 weeks’ notice. You will not necessarily move location every 6 months, you can be posted to the same location for a number of rotations. Whilst individual preferences are taken into account when arranging rotations, operational need takes precedence.

Duties include but are not limited to;

  • Forensic imaging, extraction and analysis of data from digital devices, including mobile devices, computers, and storage media
  • Supporting non-technical staff, including police officers, to operate digital forensic systems
  • Quality assuring/peer reviewing casework
  • Provision of evidence viewing capabilities for investigating officers
  • Answering technical queries from non-technical staff and police officers
  • Supporting colleagues within the Hub with queries and advice
  • Court appearance as witness of fact.

Application Process & Training

The application process will be made up of three stages which include an application, online test and interview.

Your application will need to cover the below competencies (at Level 1) from the Competency and Value Framework (CVF). Please see the attached CVF documentation which will assist you with this. Each competency includes a list of behaviours which you should demonstrate, where possible, within your example.

  • We take ownership - detail a time where you have identified a problem and explain the actions you took to resolve this. (min 200 words, max 500 words)
  • We are collaborative - detail a time where you have worked with others to achieve a task or goal. (min 200 words, max 500 words)
  • We analyse critically - detail a time you have used data to inform a decision, the thought process behind it and other relevant considerations. (min 200 words, max 500 words)

If selected for the role all candidates must attend and pass Grade II training. If unsuccessful despite support this will lead to either failing probation or reverting back to your original substantive Band.

Training will be full time between 9am and 5pm at Lambeth HQ for approximately 6 months, due to this, it will not be possible to support flexible working patterns during this time. Once competent we will consider all reasonable requests including agile working of up to 20% of your working week dependent on line manager support and operational delivery.

Departmental policy is that all members of Forensic Staff should be vaccinated against Tetanus, Hepatitis A and B, successful candidates will need to ensure they are up to date with these prior to joining. Members of Forensic Services need to provide a DNA and fingerprint elimination sample for FS’ embargo database, when accepting this role candidates are agreeing to provide these samples.

In the next 12-18 months Digital Forensics may be introducing a 24/7 operating model as part of an investment and transformation plan to ensure the best service to support operational policing. These teams will work on a rotational shift pattern compromising early, late and night shifts, inclusive of weekends. Approximately 20% of the overall staff in the Digital Forensics’ department will be required to support it. These posts attract an additional 20% shift allowance plus weekend premium payments on top of the salary advertised above. All new staff are eligible to be placed on a shift rota subject to the relevant notice given, however in the first instance placements on these teams will be allocated to those who volunteer, any remaining places will be allocated by management and will also be subject to certain skills required to support out of hours services. By applying for this role you are agreeing to join one of the 24/7 shift teams and be subject to rotation dependent on business requirements.
