About the role
We have an exciting opportunity to lead and shape our passionate and busy content design function within the organisation.
Our content team sit within the newly formed Digital Experience Unit, working closely with our research, analysis and functionality teams to create user focused, engaging, clear and concise content.
Our content team are a friendly and committed bunch, dedicated to improving Londoners and staff’s lives by supporting the organisation to show off it’s work in the best way possible.
With various tools, techniques and technology available, the team work with a rich and varied selection of content to create captivating and helpful campaigns, information and services.
You’ll have the opportunity to manage, shape and develop how we work – how we establish content design as a discipline in the organisation, how we use systems to triage and track our work, how we get the best from our staff and the organisation’s editors.
We’re looking for someone who has experience managing and developing teams and putting in place strategic ways of working. In return, you’ll have space to grow and develop, with access to a suit of in-house training and encouragement to get involved in external training, conferences and workshops.
While this opportunity is to cover maternity leave, the team, and wider unit, is expanding, so we expect further opportunities to become available.
Principal accountabilities
- Own and oversee the site structure and content from across london.gov.uk and associated sites. Ensure content is easily found, clear, engaging and shareable.
- Create and maintain strategic documents that detail and justify approach, process, direction and rationale around all aspects of digital content, content design and the way teams work.
- Manage, direct, mentor and develop staff creating digital content. Ensure they have the tools, processes and skills they need to understand requirements, manage stakeholders, test assumptions, be creative and produce concise and captivating content.
- Lead the creation, implementation and iteration of digital content guidance and patterns to establish what good quality content looks like across the organisation. Ensure alignment to brand, strategy and objectives while meeting users’ needs.
- Champion and improve the self-service model of content creation. Ensure staff across the organisation have the written guidance, training, and templates they need to create quality content, freeing up specialists to focus on priority content.
- Lead and develop a culture of user centred content design and all it involves, including user research, prototyping, user testing and a focus on user journeys and experience.
- Work alongside Product Managers and Business Analysts to design the best possible digital experiences that meet organisational objectives. Support the development of new internal and external tools and services.
Person specification
Technical requirements/experience/qualifications
- Comprehensive professional experience in writing and editing concise, engaging and plain English copy.
- Significant experience managing the structure, content and processes of high-profile websites.
- Experience of writing, communicating and implementing strategies.
- Experience of persuading and influencing senior stakeholders to gain programme or project buy-in.
- Experience leading and developing teams and staff.
- Confident ensuring accessible communications, including compliance of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1 AA).

This role is based at London Fire Brigade’s Head Office (Union Street SE1 0LL).
GLA staff are hybrid working up to 3 days a week in our offices and remotely depending on their role. As part of this, you will need to split your time between home working and coming into the office.
