Job description

Archaeology Data Service, Department of Archaeology

The Archaeology Data Service (ADS) provides digital data archiving services for UK archaeology. It is based in the University of York but works closely with external partners, both in Higher Education and in the public and commercial archaeological sectors. All archived data is available Open Access and ADS funding is equally split between data deposit charges and research and consultancy, including a number of international projects. The ADS also manages the highly regarded Open Access journal, Internet Archaeology. Currently over 15 staff are employed.

This position is aimed at either someone who is at an early stage of their archaeological career, perhaps as an archaeologist working in the commercial or public sector, or an established archaeologist who wishes to develop new skills. It is envisaged as a fixed term trainee role, normally for 3 years. It is anticipated that the post-holder will spend much of their time focussed on the archiving of the digital outputs of commercial projects, but there will be opportunities to be involved in ADS research projects. Secondments will be considered. • Assisting in the preparation, production and maintenance of webpages.

  • Undertaking directed and self-directed informal and formal training.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • A general education to include 5 GCSE passes at Grade 4 (C) or above, including Maths and English, or equivalent educational qualifications.

  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • An ability to work on your own initiative, with appropriate guidance/direction
  • Good accuracy and attention to detail; and be able to complete tasks on time and to a specified standard

You should also set high professional and personal standards, with the ability to work flexibly, away from the office if required, to adapt to change and service improvements, and be motivated towards good customer service. You should have a willingness to keep updated, learn new skills and receive relevant training as required.

In addition, a degree level qualification in archaeology or other relevant subject AND/OR experience of work in the historic environment or archives sector, and knowledge of archaeology and the UK historic environment sector or digital preservation practices are desirable.
