Job description
Kobalt Intro:
Kobalt is one of the world's largest, most innovative music companies, using technology to power creative freedom, transparency, ownership and control for artists, songwriters, publishers, and labels.
Founded in 2000 by Swedish entrepreneur Willard Adhitz, the startup built a platform to maximize efficiency, accuracy, and transparency across the billions of micro-payments collected in today's highly complex digital world. As the traditional music companies fought technology and contracted, Kobalt embraced it and grew, building an infrastructure and world-class creative team purposely designed to usher in the streaming era, along with a more fair, rewarding music business for creators. Our technology enables them to access royalty payments 4x faster while also maximising the royalty collection amounts.
With over 400 employees in 12 offices around the world, Kobalt today represents over 31,000 artists and songwriters, 700,000 songs and 600 publishing companies. Kobalt is proud to work with artists, songwriters, and companies like Childish Gambino, Max Martin, Paul McCartney and MPL Communications, Disney Music Group, and many more.
Context:
Kobalt continues to grow 3x faster than the market and as such has a continuous focus on scaling out its systems, products and services to cope with the increasing demand. One of the key opportunities for Kobalt is to address the masses of songwriters that are reasonably early in their careers and as such struggle to get representation from strong publishers. As most publishers depend on primarily manual processes, the cost of service usually outweighs the revenue potential that those songwriters would generate. Through technology, Kobalt aims to reduce the cost of service for each individual songwriter, making it viable to support large numbers of songwriters at a marginal cost.
Who is the Developer Platform team?
The Developer Platform team is changing the way we do engineering at KTech. Our aim is to improve efficiency, standards, architecture and developer happiness through continuous improvement and developer feedback. We rely heavily on technical innovation to support a fast-growing business. Improving engineering culture is as important as improving our engineering standards.
Recent Projects:
Recently we have focussed on building our new kubernetes platform, allowing teams to build, deploy and monitor new services from Backstage templates. We have refined our usage of AWS accounts, increased security through Cloudflare, helped teams to migrate to kubernetes and much more.
It's a great place to build on your devops skills or shift from a developer role. We have visibility of all technical areas and so there are always opportunities to learn new technologies and work with different teams. The team is very supportive so even if you have limited experience in some technical areas we would still love to talk to you.
What will you bring:
- You will have an interest in software architecture and understand that our work helps shape and support KTech's technical strategy.
- You will ensure that we build the right thing for the right people, innovate and experiment but learn to fail fast. We are predominantly AWS and kubernetes focussed but you could be working with any tech stack.
- Our kubernetes and AWS account structure adoption continues, so you will be a positive, creative team player with a big-picture mindset to join us on this journey.
What does success look like:
- You are willing to contribute to our engineering culture, collaborate closely with developers and learn the industry of music publishing.
- You will ensure that we build the right thing for the right people, innovate and experiment but learn to fail fast. We are predominantly AWS and kubernetes focussed but you could be working with any tech stack.
Team Tech stack
- The Developer Platform team primarily run our systems in AWS, and within AWS we use many of the native resources including EKS, ECS, RDS, MSK and EMR
- We take an infrastructure-as-code approach using Terraform
- We run containerised services in ECS, but are shifting over to EKS/Kubernetes
- Our team uses Spotify's Backstage as our service catalogue, and create new services via multiple Backstage templates which we develop and support.
- To create a secure, scalable and robust platform for developers to build on we use Kubernetes technologies such as Flux, Helm, Linkerd, Karpenter and Polaris.
- We use GitHub, CircleCI, Artifactory and Datadog for managing the software lifecycle
- To secure all public access to our sites and APIs we use Cloudflare.
What do we offer:
- Salary Range: Discuss with the Talent Partner.
- Flexible working. KTech operates with a hybrid working policy (fully remote possible).
- 25 days annual.
- 1 well being day per quarter.
- Half day summer Fridays (July and August).
- Christmas closure.
- Meeting free Fridays afternoon outside of the summer months. We use this as dedicated learning time.
- 5% pension contribution.
- Health Insurance.
Interview Process and our commitments to you:
- Recruiter Call (30mins)
- Hiring Manager Call (60 mins)
- Technical Round (120 mins)
- Cultural Round (30-45mins)
We are committed to completing the process in 2 working weeks and are willing to be flexible to meet the candidates requirements.
We are also committed to providing feedback on each interview no longer than 24hrs after the interview via email, telephone call or ZOOM.
