This position focuses on the Natural Resources Program's stewardship work especially as it relates to the management efforts and restoration to improve natural resource degradations on State Parks lands. The restoration specialist will work with the natural resource team and other division personnel, state and federal agencies, & other cooperative partners to evaluate, set standards, plan for, and implement necessary restoration and management activities in accordance with our agency mission and policies. The position may supervise temporary and permanent employees, volunteers and interns. Other duties include working with and training park staff and providing them with the scientific information needed to make appropriate resource management decisions; managing stewardship activities in the field; collecting, maintaining and using data on restoration activities and managing substantial budgets.
Key Responsibilities:
- Timber & land cover restoration (including the planning, implementation, & environmental compliance) due to off-site species or corrections of prior land-uses.
- Groundcover restoration including collection of materials, planting, and species reintroductions.
- Wetlands restoration activities.
- Invasive species management.
- Fire management.
- Possess or have the ability to obtain registration as a Forester from the NC Board of Registration for Foresters within 3 years of hire date.

In order to qualify for this position you must meet ALL the following KSA's listed below:
- Proven knowledge of conservation principles for the protection & enhancement of natural resource-based parks, natural areas, recreation areas, waterways, and other management units.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the scientific principles related to restoration of natural systems including forest & woodland silvicultural practices, grasslands, and wetlands management.
- Proven knowledge of the natural sciences (fire, botany, conservation biology, entomology, watershed management, soils, wildlife, zoology)
- Demonstrated experience with research and adaptive management processes associated with managing restoration efforts.
- Demonstrated experience with research and data gathering techniques (including sampling regime design, analysis, review, interpretation, and evaluation procedures.
- Demonstrated experience using Microsoft systems, GIS and other/or geographic information systems,
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Division personnel, other government agency representatives, environmental groups, park stakeholder groups, neighbors, and the general public.
- Ability to organize, collaborate for, and supervise/direct complex contracts, research studies, and project work in comingled timelines with others effectively.
- Ability to actively engage in management activity implementation, including forestry activities, planting, collections, invasive species treatments, and prescribed fire use.
- Ability to learn and utilize new technologies including Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), remote sensing & new analysis developments, and remote monitoring technologies.

Bachelor's degree in one of the agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
