TV Current Affairs is a busy and vibrant department making long form international and domestic films and series for BBC 2 and BBC Three.
Some of our recent productions include the This World film Shamima Begum Story, India: The Modi Question for BBC Two and The Instagram Effect for BBC Three.
Current Affairs TV is facing a significant challenge in a world where audience habits are changing as fast as the digital world lets them. We need to ensure that our films have the creativity and ambition to make an impact in this ever-changing world. We are therefore looking to hire an experienced and enthusiastic development producer to join our small.
The right candidate will be passionate about the news, always up to date on unfolding domestic and international events and a strong writer.
We are looking to hire an experienced development producer to join our small but vibrant team
Main ResponsibilitiesThe Development Producer is responsible for generating, developing and researching new ideas for the BBC long form TV current affairs slate.
They will be expected to contribute to development brainstorms, as well as developing ideas independently.
They will need to be tuned into both domestic and international current affairs issues, as well as identify potential new BBC current affairs talent.
They make also be expected to produce, shoot and edit taster tapes. Shooting and editing experience is therefore desirable but not mandatory.
They will generate ideas for development, showing an awareness of the current affairs long form television market in the UK and internationally.
The right candidate will need to to be able to demonstrate the ability to produce well researched, crafted and compelling treatments.
They will be expected to attend commissioner and channel meetings to pitch their ideas.
The Development Producer may be expected to junior development team members work – advising them on access negotiation tactics, monitoring their research and overseeing treatments.
On occasion, the development producer will run brainstorms or access meetings on behalf of the Head of Development.
Are you the right candidate?Required Experience and Skills
- A thorough understanding of the BBC’s long form current affairs output across the BBC.
- Experience developing long form current affairs ideas for British broadcasters.
- At least 18 months experience writing detailed programme treatments.
- Strong writing skills and the ability to proof for grammar and spelling an requirement. As part of the interview process, we would like to see two examples of treatments you have researched and written.
- A solid understanding and some demonstrable experience of negotiating access to contributors, institutions and to talent.
- The ideal candidate would also have a basic understanding of broadcast legal and compliance issues related to current affairs programming.
- To be a creative self-starter with initiative and tenacity but also a team worker, who is able to work alongside a small development team.
- An understanding of the BBC’s values and how to reflect those in the output of our content.
- To be technically proficient to the requirements of the role – Microsoft word and Powerpoint. Photoshop skills desirable.
- A willingness to nurture and develop junior members of the team.
Only applicants with prior development experience as an senior AP or producer will be considered for this role.
Shortlisted candidates will be provided with and expected to supply writing samples and complete a writing task.
