Scotland’s International Environment Centre

Scotland’s International Environment Centre (SIEC) is a pioneering collaboration that seeks to deliver transformational change in the protection and enhancement of our biodiversity and natural resources to drive increased economic prosperity, wellbeing, and a just transition to a net zero future.

Established as part of the Stirling and Clackmannanshire City Region Deal, SIEC is funded through an investment of £17m from the Scottish Government and £5m from the UK Government, with additional funding leveraged through private and match-funded investment. The investment builds on the University’s global reputation for environmental science, and the Forth Valley’s established status as a hub for environmental and conservation activity in Scotland.

The Forth Climate Forest

The Forth Climate Forest is a key partnership project hosted by SIEC and delivered with Stirling, Clackmannanshire and Falkirk Councils and Loch Lomond and Trossachs national park. The project will engage individuals, communities and landowners on tree planting within the Forth Valley Area (FVA) to deliver improved canopy cover, woodland connectivity and carbon sequestration amongst wider for a range of social, climate and ecological benefits.

The Development Officer will be responsible for the day-to-day delivery of development opportunities for the Forth Climate Forest. The post holder will lead on identifying and pursuing funding opportunities for the FCF and opportunities within it, including liaising with landowners, private and public funders and exploiting opportunities for commercial income generation to sustain the FCF allied to carbon sequestration and woodland expansion.


Description of Duties

  • Work alongside the FCF canopy and community officer to support the FCF director in the identification of strategic priorities for tree planting and woodland expansion across the Forth Valley area
  • Liaise with local councils, landowners and wider stakeholders to identify funding opportunities for tree planting projects and advise on application strategy
  • Liaise with potential funders across public and private sector, identifying and pursuing planting opportunities that deliver opportunities and meet funder objectives
  • Support and lead on the development of the commercial opportunities related to FCF
  • Lead on the development of the commercial opportunities in relation to the offer to the business community. Articulating these in the most appropriate way creating marketing, communications and relevant promotional materials
  • Support the FCF Director to develop potential for carbon-related investment into local projects in line with industry standard
  • Ensure the highest standard of record keepingand data analysis to support evidencing of FCF delivery and associated report writing
  • Negotiate and coordinate with landowners/managers, businessesand strategic partners on FCF projects
  • Work with the wider Business Engagement & Development Team to develop andsupport commercial opportunities relevant to the FCF
  • Track pipeline activity on appropriate management systems
  • Manage accounts of key partners and clients
  • Advertise wider SIECand UoS commercial opportunities, where appropriate in conjunction with the SIEC and Business Engagement and Development teams
  • To supportthe FCF Director with development of marketing materials and promotion

Essential Criteria
  • Educated to degree level, or with equivalent work experience and evidence of delivery
  • Substantial employment experience across a range of relevant roles with increasing levels of responsibility
  • A well-developed understanding of major challenges and opportunities linked to climate, biodiversity and health and wellbeing
  • Highly-developed interpersonal skills necessary to build and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of colleagues across the public, private, and charitable sectors
  • Experience in developing and implementing clear strategies and workplans to provide for priority activities
  • Ability to anticipate potential implementation difficulties and identify practical ways of overcoming and preventing them
  • Proven ability to provide clear guidance and advice
  • Highly organised with the ability to work across multiple workstreams with strong attention to detail and accuracy, delivering against specified deadlines
  • Ability to consider the wider implications of decisions and to use judgment in order to make decisions appropriately
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills with the ability to use a wide range of styles appropriate to different individuals, groups and situations
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a busy team and within wider collaborative contexts
  • Ability to build proactive and productive relationships with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong commitment to operational excellence and customer care/relationship management
  • Excellent IT skills, including Microsoft Office 365

Desirable Criteria
  • Project Management qualification and/or experience
  • Experience of working successfully within complex regulations/frameworks
  • Knowledge or experience of planning, developing or implementing tree planting projects
  • Experience of developing and delivering on funding proposals
