Job description
As a Developer working for Borders and Trade, you’ll be a key part of a multidisciplinary delivery team, building the software necessary to meet users’ needs and the identified business requirements.
Following best practices, you’ll write clean, secure, and well-tested code, so it is important that you have a logical and analytical approach when it comes to problem solving and keeping close attention to detail.
As well as development experience, you’ll also have a breadth of testing experience, being able to quality assure to ensure that the product and service meets user needs.
You’ll be working with various stakeholders across Borders and Trade, unlocking the potential of software components to deliver value to stakeholders. This will be done through designing, coding, verifying, testing, amending and refactoring moderately complex programmes and scripts
You’ll also be able to monitor and report on progress as well as propose practical solutions to resolve issues after identifying any that are related to software development activities; and will complete this in reviews of work with others where this is appropriate.

Essential Criteria:
You will be able to demonstrate experience of:
- Working alongside other developers and professions to realise working software.
- Working with programming languages such as C.
- Experience of using Unix.
- Good understanding of code error resolution, software backup and recovery strategies.
- Good analytical skills.
- Experience of operating a live service.
Desirable Criteria:
It is desirable for you to demonstrate experience of:
- Application Master (AM) and System Control Language (SCL).
- COBOL programming skills.
- Experience of VME operating system.

Personal Statement of no more than 500-words – please provide details on how you meet the Essential Criteria for this role, by stating what you have done and how you went about it. It should be aligned to demonstrate your suitability for this role, based on your experience and the technical skills listed in the essential criteria.

Interviews will take place via Teams.
