We are pleased to announce that the application window for Detention Officers is now open! We have several opportunities based at both Clough Road in Hull and Birchin Way in Grimsby.
Our Detention Officers are there to provide a high level of care and welfare to our detained persons throughout their time in custody. They support not only detainees, but the Custody Sergeants, Police Officers visiting custody and any third parties such as Nurse practitioners.
What does the role include?
- Booking in detainees, including identifying issues that will impact their welfare and initial searches.
- Managing the care of detainees throughout the period of their detention, including regular assessments for any change in behaviour.
- Undertake a broad range of testing to support evidential procedures, this can include tests for DNA, fingerprints and drugs.
- Assist with the booking out procedure, which includes exit assessments, ensuring all related records are completed and cells are secured and ready for the next occupier.
Reality of the role:
As a Detention Officer, you are there to ensure individuals who have been arrested are safe, have access to and understand their rights, and are treat with fairness and dignity. We are looking for compassionate and open-minded individuals, who will prioritise welfare of the detainees.
Custody can be a challenging environment to work in, teamwork and adaptability is critical to the success of operation. You will be placed into a team who you will regularly be on shift with, supporting each other with work as well ensuring each other’s wellbeing.
What is required?
- Educated to GCSE or equivalent.
- Literate & numerate.
- Experience of working with the general public and dealing with potential conflict situations.
- Previous clerical experience incorporating a wide range of duties such as administrative procedures, telephone queries, record keeping etc.
- Experience of using computers to input, amend and extract information.
- Excellent communication skills to deal sympathetically but positively with people from various backgrounds.
- Speaks clearly and effectively in a way appropriate to the audience.
- Must be assertive and confident in dealing with detainees when problems/conflict arises.
- Experience of working as part of a team.
- Confident manner with the ability to gain credibility with others, influencing acceptance of new practices and procedures.
- Physically fit in order to meet the demands of the role.
- Full driving licence and has access to own transport and/or is able to travel to all areas of the force on a 24/7 basis.
Working pattern:
Detention Officers work a 4 on 4 off pattern. This consists of two day time shifts (7am-7pm), two night time shifts (7pm-7am) and then 4 days off. You will be aware of your shift pattern a year in advance.
Training:
Your first 5 weeks as a Detention Officer will consist of formal training, based at our Courtland Road site in Hull. This will be a mixture of classroom and practical training and will include topic such as personal safety, processes and system training. We ask during these weeks, you do not take any annual leave, so as not to miss any critical training.
