SUMMARY
The Design Engineer is responsible for various engineering assignments from concept to completion. Prepares clear, complete and accurate working plans and detail drawings from rough or detailed sketches or notes. Develops detailed design drawing and related specification of parts and mechanical equipment under the direction of the Engineering Manager.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Working from prints, samples, or instructions, etc., creates fully detailed drawings and working plans which clearly and unambiguously convey all of the information necessary to manufacture, check and inspect the particular item whether it is a part or an assembly. Achieves this by conferring with vendors, engineering personnel and others to develop product specifications.
- Makes necessary changes and adjustments and maintains documentation and records of such changes.
- Participates in various engineering projects starting from basic ideas and carrying through to completion to facilitate project completion and develop personal knowledge and skills.
- Designs new custom products, mechanisms and adaptations of standard product following the direction of Engineering Management and suggestions of senior Engineers.
- Directs and coordinates the manufacturing or building of prototypes or production parts to meet scheduled completion dates.
- Provides technical information and support to customers and other departments.
- Utilizes knowledge of various machines, engineering practices, mathematics, and other physical sciences to complete drawings. Makes any adjustments or changes necessary or desired.
- Designs molds, jigs, fixtures, mechanisms and special tools which are required for the manufacture of products determined necessary for the growth of the company using computer-aided design. This includes preparation of preliminary layout drawings, design drawings, establishment of specifications and standards, necessary detailed drawings and bills of material.
- Responsible for correctness of detailed drawings needed to build the tool and communication with the tool builder.
- Provides technical information for the procurement of special materials and the placing (through purchasing) of any orders for required standard equipment.
- Shows dimensions, materials to be used, and other information necessary to make detailed drawings clear and complete.
- Checks dimensions of parts, relation of part to another, and relation of various parts to whole structure or project.
- Confers with research, vendors and other engineering personnel to determine product specification and prepares design modifications as required.
- Modifies machine design to correct operating deficiencies or to reduce customers' problems.
- Assists team in any engineering related functions including the improvement of productivity of existing manufacturing equipment.
- Assists in checking drawings and designs for others in the Engineering Group.
- Follows all departmental procedures to ensure quality requirements are met.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent from a four-year college or technical school and three plus year's related experience and/or training; or two plus years related experience (injection molding) and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Must have the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Must have the ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis. Ability to perform tolerance studies.
REASONING ABILITY
Must have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is indoors. The noise level in the work environment is moderate. Anytime that the employee is in the plant, he/she is required to follow all safety rules and procedures including, but not limited to, using required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
