Round Mountain is an open-pit mine located in Nevada, one of the best mining jurisdictions in the world. The mine uses conventional open-pit mining methods and processes ore by mill and heap leach. Kinross began operating the mine in 2003, and it has since become a continuous improvement leader in the Company’s portfolio. Round Mountain poured its 15 millionth ounce in 2018. Round Mountain and the nearby Bald Mountain mine make up Kinross’ Nevada operations. The Round Mountain mine is an important contributor to the Nye County economy and, working with local stakeholders, has helped achieve significant improvements in healthcare and education in the area. Job Description Incumbent will work as part of a team to provide complete design & environmental services for a gold mining operation and ancillary facilities. Under the direction of the Environmental Superintendent or Manager will ensure that company activities are conducted in accordance with company requirements and in compliance with local, state and federal environmental regulations and licenses. Will conduct all activities in a safe manner and align performance and daily functions to reflect Kinross’ values. Job Responsibilities 1. Prepare designs for new projects at the Engineering Design Change level and No Fee Review level to support the permitting activities of the environmental department, such as: a. Modifications to piping, secondary containment b. Closure cover c. Slope reclamation d. Water lines projects e. Stormwater designs 2. Assist in mapping and volume calculations for closure activities such as stockpile for closure, cover design and placement, QA/QC, soil moistures and densities. Understands and uses topographic data and volumes. 3. Work in collaboration with the Engineer of Record to provide cover design for the tailings dam. 4. Prepare maps in AutoCAD and GIS for Reclamation Cost Estimates. 5. Support for site operational project as time allows. 6. Must work towards obtaining a Professional Engineer stamp in the State of Nevada. Education and Experience 1. A Bachelor’s degree in civil, mining or mechanical engineering. 2. Mining industry experience is a plus, but not required. 3. Experience in an engineering company is an asset. 4. Preference will be given to experience using the following: PE stamp in Nevada Interest in obtaining a PE stamp within 1-2 years AutoCAD / Map 3D Other GIS software 5. Strong technical and analytical skills. 6. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Able to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and management, regulators and governmental agencies. 7. Able to work as part of a team, in cooperation with other departments at RMGC. 8. Able to work independently to manage workload and prioritize tasks. 9. Strong organizational and administrative skills. 10. Experienced and skilled using the following software packages: Microsoft Word / Microsoft Excel / Microsoft Access or other database software 11. Preference given to working experience at an open pit gold mine(s) and/or experience in Nevada. 12. Must be at least 18 years old and authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. 13. Must have a valid driver’s license. 14. General understanding of mining operations, as well as limited understanding of milling and maintenance operations. 15. Working knowledge and skill with P.C. utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software. 16. Demonstrates strong administrative, organizational and technical writing skills Skills 7. Conduct all activities safely, in accordance with RMGC safety rules and policies, to prevent harm to self and others. 8. Ensure RMGC compliance with the requirements of environmental permits, licenses, and regulations, focusing on monitoring, record-keeping and reporting requirements. 9. Effectively communicate with site personnel regarding regulatory obligations. 10. Complete permitting activities in a timely manner by soliciting and gathering necessary information from affected operational departments, and submitting complete applications, to minimize permitting delays and ensure that company operations and projects are not hindered. 11. Develop and maintain rapport with regulators and government agencies to foster a working relationship that minimizes adversarial actions, enforcement actions and penalties. 12. Coordinate and manage environmental projects, including contractor and consultant activities. 13. Conduct regular inspections, in accordance with the RMGC Environmental Department procedures, of company operations to ensure regulatory compliance. 14. Monitor proposed environmental regulatory changes and with an eye to their effect on operations and demands on resources (personnel, financial). 15. Inform the Superintendent, Environmental Department, immediately of any compliance or permitting issues that may affect the company. 16. Ensure that departmental and company goals are achieved by participating in short and long-range planning activities. 17. As a member of the department, provide environmental awareness training to site employees. 18. Comply with all company policies and procedures including, but not limited to safety, environmental, confidentiality and code of conduct. 19. Meet or exceed the performance expectations established by management. 20. Punctuality and regular attendance required. 21. Perform other functions as assigned by supervisor. 22. Must have strong technical writing skills. 23. Must be able to communicate effectively with all levels of staff and management.
