ABOUT THE ROLE
Digital Spy, the UK’s biggest TV and movies website, is looking for a bright, hardworking Movies obsessive to join its team of dedicated superfans. The Deputy Movies Editor will help to run the best and busiest Movies desk in UK media, the country’s most authoritative and enjoyable source for popular entertainment news.
Reporting to the Movies Editor, you will source and write features and news stories on all areas of movies – from Marvel’s tentpole releases to A24’s latest under-the-radar gem. You’ll know your Mandalorians from your Midichlorians and be able to spontaneously list ten reasons why Midsommar was one of the great movies of the 2010s.
ABOUT YOU
We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic digital movies journalist with a well-stuffed contacts book wanting to take a step up. The winning candidate will be highly organised and have an encyclopedic knowledge of all things movies. They will have a profound understanding of the specific requirements of digital media. They will be a witty and stylish writer, a data hound driven by analytics with excellent SEO experience. You’ll be a team player, collaborative and vocal, as well as a creative thinker capable of generating a constant stream of ideas.
The ideal candidate will know their major blockbuster franchises (and lore) as well as the British movie landscape, you’ll also know the Netflix film release schedule better than your own mother’s birthday.
JOB SPEC: (Main duties and Responsibilities)
- Source and conduct interviews with the aim to write and provide exclusive news stories about movies.
- Predict audience interest in upcoming movies and write and generate multiple daily movies features that respond to that demand in advance.
- Work with the news department to help steer Digital Spy's coverage of movies, ensuring it upholds Digital Spy’s rigorous standards of accuracy and evenhandedness.
- Create, update and plan e-commerce content related to entertainment and movies.
- Work alongside the Movies Editor and Social Media team to formulate and enact a strong, smart and engaging social strategy for the Movies section.
- Plan and implement long-term search wins within the field of movies.
- Keep abreast of the changing movies landscape day by day.
- Attend and report on relevant and appropriate movie events such as launches, finales, junkets, awards and red carpets (Occasionally this will involve evening, weekends, and unsociable hours).
- Maintain good contacts with movie publicists and the wider industry.
- Appear on radio, TV and social media broadcasts where necessary to discuss the movies industry and promote the Digital Spy brand.
- Analyse and report on DS audience data for movies to the Editor-in-Chief and wider team, and respond to it.
- Deputise for the Movies Editor in their absence
- To attend regular meetings for planning, strategy, and statistical reports across Digital Spy and Hearst UK.
