Deputy Head of Education

Salary: £54,096 - £65,024

Location: West London

Purpose

We are looking for an experienced, committed, and dynamic individual to work with our Head of Education to lead our education service at the Young Offenders Institute.

Our aim is to provide a quality and engaging service to young people to help them to achieve the best possible outcomes. Our Education team work with young people to engage them with education provision, to develop them through learning, to increase their self-confidence, improve their wellbeing, and to gain experiences which will improve their employability and their access to opportunities upon their release.

As Deputy Head of Education you will play a key role in providing strategic and operational direction, managing and coaching the Education team with a focus on driving high quality performance and outcomes. You will bring your experience to the role to inform effective strategies for supporting young people with complex needs and barriers.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide positive and purposeful leadership of Education services within HMYOI
  • Contribute to the strategic planning and development of the education service, including timetabling and the curriculum
  • Lead on quality assurance and development activities for teaching and learning
  • Share responsibility for the management of the Education department and staff therein
  • Lead on the development and implementation of current, planned, and future initiatives which result in improved learner outcomes
  • Lead on performance management activities with frontline staff
  • Help to ensure that the Education service’s organisational and process structures are fit for purpose and aligned with the institution ’s processes and security requirements
  • Support the identification and exploitation of opportunities that will improve the educational performance of young people at HMYOI
  • Represent education services as part of the institution ’s Senior Management Team, contributing to institution-wide strategic planning and review
  • Help to ensure the learning environment for all young people is one of high standards of behaviour, respect, safety, and fairness
  • Help to ensure that the education provided at HMYOI meet the requirements of quality agencies such as OFSTED and His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons (HMIP)
  • Help to ensure that demanding targets are set and achieved throughout the organisation, where quality and performance are monitored rigorously
  • Help to ensure effective communication between education service staff and the wider institution
  • Lead on the consultation, development, and implementation of the Ministry of Justice Secure Setting Education Reform Bill
  • Help to ensure adherence to the company’s equalities and diversity policy
  • Lead on the delivery of timely and reliable contractually required information in accordance with HMPPs and MOJ requirements

Skills and Experience

  • Qualified teacher
  • National Professional Qualification for Senior Leadership(NPQSL) qualified or working towards
  • Significant experience in an educational leadership role or member of a Senior Leadership Team
  • Substantial and varied teaching experience / Leadership and management experience within Special Schools, Pupil Referral Units / APs, or schools with a significant proportion of learners with Social Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs
  • Successful track record of developing, leading and managing a team effectively
  • Experience of managing an appropriate, challenging, and balanced curriculum
  • Experience of working with children and young people with a wide range of additional needs
  • Successful experience of partnership and multi-agency working
  • Evidence of the ability to adapt swiftly and respond effectively to challenges
  • Evidence of the ability to implement and manage continuous quality assurance and improvement processes
  • Experience of all assessment, monitoring and evaluation processes for teaching and learning
  • Evidence of understanding the Youth Justice System
  • Experience of writing School Evaluation/Self-Assessment reports and related School Improvement Plan (SIP)
  • Excellent people manager and communicator with strong negotiation and influencing skills
