The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 9,000 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.
The DOC seeks to recruit a Deputy Director for the Fine and Performing Arts Unit assigned to the Division of Programs and Community Partnerships. The selected candidate will report to the Director of Enrichment Programs. The Deputy Director of Fine and Performing Arts will oversee staff in multiple facilities and support them as they develop and implement appropriate leisure time and free time activities to be incorporated into the program plan targeting persons in custody. The selected candidate will provide leadership, guidance, and participate in organized group activities that promote positive group dynamics and productively occupy persons in custody with activities of interest to them. Supervision and monitoring of this core component of the program plan is necessary to ensure effective delivery of programming. Under supervision of the Director of Enrichment Programs, with latitude of independent judgement, the Deputy Director of Fine and Performing Arts will be responsible for, but not limited to:
modification programming through various fine and performing arts interventions and opportunities;
goals related to the expansion of arts programming, both at DOC and post-release;
professional growth;
correctional settings, and spending time within the facilities to understand overall operational
trends; motivate and mentor direct reports by communicating clear expectations, setting
performance objectives, providing regular and timely feedback, ensuring and supporting
professional growth;
relevant reports and data, assist with the orders and purchases of materials/equipment required;
and regulations;

- Supervise a team of Arts Project Coordinators;
- Manage the implementation of appropriate system of policies, internal controls, data collection
modification programming through various fine and performing arts interventions and opportunities;
- Provide leadership, guidance, share the vision, and assist with day-to-day management of
goals related to the expansion of arts programming, both at DOC and post-release;
- In collaboration with uniform staff, the Deputy Director will implement structures for various
- Develop, evaluate and refine performance indicators for the Fine and Performing Arts Unit’s
- Provide analysis and recommendations for proactive strategies as required;
- Motivate and mentor direct reports by communicating clear expectations, setting
professional growth;
- Coordinate compliance activities to remain abreast of the status of the Fine and Performing Arts
correctional settings, and spending time within the facilities to understand overall operational
trends; motivate and mentor direct reports by communicating clear expectations, setting
performance objectives, providing regular and timely feedback, ensuring and supporting
professional growth;
- Evaluate program effectiveness as an integral part of the Division of Programs, which includes, but
relevant reports and data, assist with the orders and purchases of materials/equipment required;
- Maintain statistics and assist in research and best practices pertaining to correctional treatments;
- Convene daily, weekly, and ad-hoc stakeholder meetings to ensure arts services are afforded in
and regulations;
- Collaborate with Deputy Director of Recreation on projects as appropriate;
- Perform related duties as required;
Minimum Qual Requirements
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and two years of full-time paid experience in correction, social work, psychology, law, public administration or related field providing direct services to an inmate or detention population within a correctional or related facility; or
2. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State’s Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization and four years of full-time paid experience as described in “1” above; or
3. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above. Service as an inmate in a correctional or related facility may be substituted for a portion of the required experience up to a maximum of two years on a year for year basis. A graduate degree from an accredited college or university with a major in social work, psychology, law, criminal justice or public administration which includes a field placement performing duties as described above may be substituted for up to one year of full-time paid experience as described above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of full-time paid experience as described in "1" above.
2. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State’s Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization and four years of full-time paid experience as described in “1” above; or
3. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above. Service as an inmate in a correctional or related facility may be substituted for a portion of the required experience up to a maximum of two years on a year for year basis. A graduate degree from an accredited college or university with a major in social work, psychology, law, criminal justice or public administration which includes a field placement performing duties as described above may be substituted for up to one year of full-time paid experience as described above. Preferred Skills
- Master’s Degree from an accredited college in Creative Arts Therapy, Social Work,
- Supervisory experience in a group, community, educational, or institutional setting is preferred.
- Knowledge of the criminal justice system and experience working with justice involved populations.
- Knowledge of arts-related programming, ability to think quickly and creatively.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of correctional staff.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment, prepare written reports and documents.
- Knowledge of human development and behavior, counseling techniques, behavior modification
- Ability to mentor and provide positive interaction, guidance, and leadership to people in custody.
- Excellent writing, communication, inter-personal, analytical, research, problem-solving,
- Licensure in field of Creative Arts Therapy, Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, or similar.
- Experience and comfort working in a jail setting is a plus.
