What’s the role about?

We have an exciting opportunity for a talented Delivery & Operations Lead to join our John Lewis Digital Delivery team.

As a leader of our Agile delivery teams, you will be instrumental in guiding teams taking products from their conception through to implementation, utilising your passion for delivery and an excellent understanding of how to define and deliver solutions interactively and collaboratively in order to achieve business outcomes and value.

You will assure, execute and maintain digital services within a specific functional domain (e.g. customer, payment, order services, etc). Managing significant budgets, this role will maintain a strategic view of technical services, projects and outcomes whilst working and managing dependencies within and across domains. You will also focus on developing and maintaining stakeholder relationships, demonstrating effective influencing skills.

What will you be doing as a Delivery & Operations Lead

You will:

  • Work closely with the Head(s) of Product, and Product Leads, to understand the Product strategy and help delivery teams execute on it for customer and business value.

  • Implement architectural and business commerce strategy across Digital revenue streams.

  • Have responsibility for entire digital domains, ensuring they work to exemplary standards, are highly skilled and remove impediments to success.

  • Own and manage inter-portfolio dependencies across the Partnership, to mitigate business risk while protecting throughput and business value.

  • Own and assure operability end-to-end on all digital services, ensuring teams self-support services to optimum risk/cost ratio.

  • Empower Partners to learn and grow into contemporary agile ways of working, and you will facilitate enhancement of the skill levels of team members.

  • Measure service(s) throughput, and value released, to ensure it is meeting the required business impact.

  • Ensure Partners are empowered and enjoy their work by supporting their ownership of our most difficult problems.

  • Optimise the cost of delivery by effectively managing Partners and 3rd Parties, driving efficiency and mitigating waste in the process.

  • Strike a balance between prioritisation to remove technical debt and close services, applications and infrastructure safely.

  • Line Manage Partners in-line with JLP principles, with clear OKRs and robust performance management.

  • Have a deep understanding of the technology stacks teams are developing in, and will be curious to know and find out more to support the growth of the digital teams.

  • Have experience of managing multiple suppliers at account level and optimising mixed model teams to achieve business outcomes. This will also include 3rd Party application and service management where required.

  • Contribute to the development of an exemplary profession in delivery and operational capability.

  • Build strong working relationships with other Delivery & Operations Leads and senior stakeholders across the wider Partnership, managing critical dependencies where applicable.

  • Foster an open and honest environment where achievements are celebrated and mistakes are learned from, demonstrating a high level of personal accountability to help resolve conflicts, where necessary.

  • Champion continuous improvement by encouraging teams to trial new techniques and ways of working and support them in their pursuit of high performance.

  • Keep up to date with evolving agile practices, tools and techniques by active involvement with the external Agile Community via meetups / blogs / conferences etc.

What you'll have

  • Experience at managing multi-million pound delivery budgets.

  • Experience at managing multiple mixed skilled, digital teams onshore and nearshore.

  • Experience of owning operational responsibility for business critical applications and / or services.

  • Experience building and developing high performing, cross functional, digital teams.

  • Deep understanding of Retail IT Delivery in a lean and agile environment.

  • Understanding of cloud and microservices architecture.

  • Deep knowledge of Agile, Scrum, Kanban, Lean and DevOps frameworks.

  • Proven history of Leading IT delivery within an agile environment.

  • Have a very strong understanding of commercial IT, digital and modern retail trends.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication.

What else could you bring?

  • Experience leading agile transformation in a medium to large organisation.

  • A background in software engineering and literacy in modern software development.

  • Experience in Programme or Portfolio management with a record of successes.
