Compensation
Pierce County Library System offers a compensation program which recognizes qualifications and experience relevant to each position. The starting pay is established typically within the hiring range below based upon the experience of the individual hired into the role. Our compensation package also includes annual increases for each additional year of experience and tenure in the role, up to the maximum (current year maximum outlined in pay grade range below). Eligibility for overtime is exclusive to positions which are FLSA status non-exempt below.
Hiring Range: $19.14 – $22.19 per hour
Pay Grade Range: $19.14 – $26.50 per hour
FLSA Status: Hourly, Non-exempt
Position Status: Substitute
Union Status: Non-Represented
Location: Administrative Center
Authorized Hours: Substitutes are used to fill-in on a limited basis when regular employees are not available for work and may occasionally be brought in for special projects. Substitute positions have no guaranteed hours and are limited to working a maximum of sixty-five (65) hours total per month (no more than 40 hours in one week).

Position Summary:
Delivers library materials throughout the Pierce County Library System.
Supervisory Relationships:
Reports to the Supervisor Driver; no supervisory responsibility is exercised.
Essential Functions:
Class specifications are intended to provide a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job.
- Delivers high-quality, customer-focused services.
- Drives a delivery van and transports library materials on a designated delivery route.
- Picks ups, sorts, and distributes materials to appropriate library locations.
- Loads and unloads crates of library materials at PAC and branch library locations.
- Performs daily vehicle inspections and monitors for maintenance requirements.
- Demonstrates punctuality and regular and consistent attendance.
- Brings matters of public concern regarding waste, inefficiency, corruption, discrimination, and safety to the attention of Library Management.
- Accurately communicates the Library’s policies to members of the public in all job-related contacts.
- Positively reflects Pierce County Library’s mission, vision, and values to members of the public and to staff.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Required Knowledge of:
- Basic public library operations and services.
- Library delivery operations, policies, and procedures.
- Driving, traffic laws and vehicle/road safety protocols.
- Materials handling and processing principles.
- Customer service standards and protocols.
Required Skill in:
- Coordinating and performing a variety of delivery driver functions.
- Ensuring the timely delivery of library materials throughout the Library System.
- Performing daily vehicle checks and safely operating a large delivery van.
- Loading, unloading, and organizing delivery loads.
- Accurately sorting and distributing library materials.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent, and
- Two years experience as a delivery driver; or
- Any combination of education and experience which would provide the required knowledge and skills and allows successful performance of the job.
Licenses, Certifications, and Special Requirements:
- A valid Washington State Driver’s License is required.
- Must pass local police and Washington State Adult/Child Abuse records check prior to hire.
- Must be available to work on and an “on-call” basis and be able to work a variety of schedules on short notice including evenings and weekends.
Working Environment and Physical Requirements:
- Work is performed in and around library facilities and in the field with exposure to variable weather conditions, general driving hazards, and diesel fuel.
- Subject to driving, performing manual labor, standing, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and pulling/pushing heavy objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
