Job description
Dog Day Care Apprentice - Level 2 Animal Care & Welfare Assistant
Aged 16+ and want a career in the doggy daycare business?
We are a doggy day care company and store looking for two new dog-mad people to join our growing team as part of our apprentice scheme!
This apprenticeship is in conjunction with Myerscough College
We operate one of Lancashire’s newest, coolest and largest dog daycare facilities located around 10 mins outside of Preston, Lancashire, where our dogs spend the day playing and socialising in nearly 9,000 sq ft of indoor and outdoor space. We are looking to take on two apprentices to add to our team.
When here you would be working with the dogs each day in the daycare, playing with them and keeping them entertained, and making sure they behave themselves! You would also be responsible for cleaning and washing dogs and equipment amongst other duties.
The successful applicant must obviously love dogs, must be physically fit, have excellent communication skills, and be honest and trustworthy.
A passion for animal care and determination to learn is what we look for! It is essential that you are comfortable dealing with a large group of excited and playful dogs! You must be able to think fast and remain calm in any situation to always ensure the safety of all the dogs.
Within the daycare, our staff to dog ratio is around 1:8 and you will be part of a team working together each day. You should also be happy working in any weather as no matter how hard it rains, our dogs have still got to be exercised and looked after throughout the day!
About the apprenticeship - Entry Requirements:

English & maths Functional Skills Level 1 will be accepted as an alternative to GCSE’s (all potential apprentices will be asked to complete an online functional skills assessment regardless of previous qualifications*).
- An individual can only undertake an apprenticeship at the same or lower level as a qualification they already hold, if this allows the individual to acquire substantive new skills and the content of the training is materially different from any prior training or previous apprenticeship.
- Must have the right to work in England & spend at least 50% of their working hours in England over the duration of the apprenticeship.
- Have an eligible residency status. (more information on this can be found in the Employer Funding Rules document under the residency eligibility section in Annex A)

FAQ's:
How is the apprenticeship delivered?
Delivered through blended delivery programme consisting predominantly on site assessment within the workplace. With tutor visits approximately every 6 - 8 weeks.
- Theory work & learning materials are delivered online with photographic, video & audio evidence being collected through the OneFile E-Portfolio platform.
- The employer (us) will have access to the apprentices OneFile E-Portfolio so they can monitor progress & work that has been set by the tutor.
- The qualification is made up of a number of mandatory units designed to have maximum relevance to the job & integrate with day-to-day responsibilities.
- End assessment, conducted by an independent assessor, which include:Practical Assessment (Weighting 50%) – An observation of the apprentice completing one practical assessment consisting of two tasks of practical skill in which the apprentices will demonstrate their skills, behaviours & underlying knowledge, as required by the Standard.
Professional Discussion (Weighted 50%) – this will take the form of a professional discussion & portfolio review that will cover all areas of underpinning & applied knowledge, skills & behaviours.
(The portfolio will not be assessed or graded).
- There will be 2 levels of achievement: Pass & Distinction
In the unlikely event of an apprentice needing to re-sit an End Point Assessment (or elements of the End Point Assessment), then the employer will be responsible for funding these additional costs.
Please bear in mind that, due to the current situation, how the apprenticeship is delivered (block release, day release etc) is subject to change.
How long will the apprenticeship take?
The commitment of the employer & apprentice & the apprentices’ ability & age will also have an impact on the duration of the programme. However to give you a rough idea we would say the following:
- Level 2 Animal Care & Welfare Assistant – Would typically take 18 months
All applicants will be police checked. Hours of work will vary from 7.30am until 6.30pm (approximately), Mon- Fri, and pay is standard apprentice level of £5.28 per hour.
