Freeman College, based in Sheffield City Centre is an independent specialist college and part of the Ruskin Mill Trust, educating young people aged 16-25 years old.

For over 30 years, Ruskin Mill Trust has provided Specialist Independent Education to children and adults with complex needs including learning difficulties, autistic spectrum conditions and disabilities. Our provisions offer both day and residential placements and applications. Inspired by Aonghus Gordon using the insights of Rudolf Steiner, John Ruskin and William Morris, Ruskin Mill Trust works with hand, head, heart and place to provide students with the tools to transform material and in doing so transform themselves.

Day Time Support Worker

40 hours per week, 37 weeks per year - TERM TIME only

Salary (FTE) £21,756 (if over the age of 23) per annum subject to experience and qualifications – for working 40 hours and 37 weeks per year the salary is £17,754

Once Qualified in L3 Health and Social Care there is a potential to earn up to £22,736 ((FTE) after further completion of relevant RMT courses and increased length of service

Salary from 1st September 2023 (FTE) £22,192 (if over the age of 23) per annum subject to experience and qualifications – for working 40 hours and 37 weeks per year the salary is £18,110

Once Qualified in L3 Health and Social Care there is a potential to earn up to £24,120 ((FTE) after further completion of relevant RMT courses and increased length of service

An opportunity has become available to join Freeman College, Ruskin Mill Trust, as part of the committed day time support team focusing on the holistic needs of the students.

This role can be both physically and emotionally demanding, and you must have the confidence and patience to deal with and manage the challenging behaviours that our young people can present.

This role may include working part of the week on a 1:1 with a complex female student and the remainder of the week supporting other students.

This role can be extremely rewarding as you will have the opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of the young adults in our care.

To be successful in this role you will:

  • have a strong desire to support young people, have excellent observational skills, and the ability to problem-solve and think creatively to enable our students to reimagine their potential
  • demonstrate the ability to manage emotionally challenging situations with emotional intelligence and resilience, and to have the capacity to react calmly in stressful situations
  • be able to supervise and support students throughout the college day, both in sessions and free time
  • encourage and engage students to attend planned sessions and to help them become engaged in the curriculum activities
  • experience supporting people with seizures (non-epileptic) would be advantageous
  • have a sense of humour, an ability to build successful and positive relationships when young people are disengaged all whilst maintaining professional boundaries without being directive and have some flexibility in your approaches to working with our young people
  • navigate and appropriately respond to ever changing student dynamics
  • support College safeguarding procedures by reporting quickly and effectively any disclosures to the College Safeguarding Team
  • have knowledge of specialist education and experience of working with learners with learning difficulties and/ or learning disabilities and challenging behaviour
